NATO ADVOCATES BROADER POLITICAL DIALOGUE WITH RUSSIA, READS COMMUNIQUE

BRUSSELS, June 28 (RIA Novosti) - At the NATO summit in Istanbul heads of state and government of the 26 NATO members adopted a joint communique where they spoke for expanding the political dialogue consultations on key security issues with Russia.

Over the last two years, since the Russia-NATO Council was established, the parties have seen further progress in cooperation, including in joint military projects and peacekeeping operations, reads the document received by RIA Novosti.

They have succeeded in cooperation in such spheres as missile defense, operation planning in emergency situations, search and rescue operations. In this connection NATO intends to continue cooperation with Russia in areas that are of mutual interest, the communique emphasizes.

The summit's participants suggested that Russia and Ukraine discuss a possibility of their joining the Active Endeavor operation on anti-terrorist patrolling in the Mediterranean, the communique reports.

The participants also declared it necessary to complete the withdrawal of Russian troops from Moldova (the self-proclaimed republic of Transdniestria) as soon as possible and to resume top-level talks between Russia and Georgia on withdrawal of Russian military bases from the Georgian territory.
