ARAL SEA CAN DISAPPEAR

NEW YORK, June 19 (RIA Novosti) - According to experts of the UN European Economic Commission and the Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific, total draining threatens the Aral Sea.

About 90% of water resources of the Amu Darya and Syr Darya Rivers falling into the Aral Sea are used before they reach this sea, the expert report says.

In the recent 35 years the Aral Sea area reduced from 66,000 to 28,000 square kilometers.

The regional social and economic problems prevent the allocation of the money needed to restore the water infrastructure, which is the main source of many people's existence.

Central Asia sees the destruction of dams, canals, pumping stations, and drainage systems and fails to properly use water resources.

The high level of water consumption in Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan is explained by the necessity to produce electric energy, especially in winter, because these countries are not rich in hydrocarbon resources. Kazakhstan, Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan use water for irrigation.

"The situation would aggravate if Afghanistan increases water consumption," the report reads.

According to experts, the countries should consolidate cooperation and make agreements letting them use and distribute water resources more frugally and effectively, in particular, in the energy sector. The restoration of the unified Central Asian energy system sets an example of this cooperation, the report proceeds.
