MOSCOW, JUNE 10 (RIA Novosti) -The State Duma (Russia's lower parliamentary chamber) is going to study the appeal of the Legislative Assembly of South Ossetia, Andrei Kokoshin, chairman of the parliamentary committee for CIS affairs and contacts with compatriots, told journalists after the meeting in the State Duma on Thursday with Eduard Kokoita, President of South Ossetia (self-proclaimed republic within Georgia).

"The appeal of the South Ossetian Legislative Assembly to Russia's State Duma is another confirmation of the grave situation around South Ossetia", Kokoshin said.

"Duma deputies, international law experts and Russian watchers of the region will attentively examine the appeal", he said.

"Preliminary discussion, under way by deputies of our committees and colleagues from the Federation Council, necessitates close scrutiny of this document with account for the history and pre-history of the conflict around South Ossetia, feelings of the Ossetian people, the regional situation, Russian-Georgian relations, the international agreements ensuring stability in the region", Andrei Kokoshin stressed.

"Discussion of this problem in the State Duma has shown that the sweeping majority of its deputies are for the further discussion of the situation surrounding South Ossetia and are ready to support the firm line of the Russian leadership towards the ensurance of stability and security in the region, as well as security for Russian nationals residing in South Ossetia", he said.

Duma deputies have spoken up for further getting the fullest information on developments in South Ossetia.

In Moscow on Thursday he voiced the intention to pass the appeal of the South Ossetian authorities to the Russian leadership.

"We proceed from the political, legal and historical grounds for South Ossetia becoming part of Russia. Our appeal is in line with international legislation, international law, the laws of the Russian Federation", Kokoita said.

"Time has come to get rid of the epithets South and North Ossetia. It is time to get used to there being a single Ossetia", he said.

South and North Ossetia are the republics populated by mostly Ossetians and found on the southern and northern slopes of the Caucasian mountain ridge. The most of the people of Ossetia live in North Ossetia, which is part of Russia.

The Georgian-Ossetian conflict, which began with armed clashes in the early 1990s, is now worsening.
