RUSSIAN AND SOUTH KOREAN SPECIAL OPERATIONS UNITS TO CONDUCT JOINT COUNTERTERRORISM EXERCISE

MOSCOW, June 10 (RIA Novosti) - Russia's Federal Security Service (FSB) special units and a South Korean commandos team will conduct a joint counterterrorism exercise", a source in the Russian FSB Public Relations Center told RIA Novosti on Thursday.

According to the public relations center, on June 13 two border patrol ships Primorye and Nevelsk of the Russian FSB Pacific Border Guard Department carrying Russian participants of the exercise will sail off from Vladivostok (Russian port in the Far East) to the South Korean port of Pusan.

"The Russian border guards have been invited to Korea by the administration of the Regional Sea Police Department of Pusan, said the source.

According to him, the joint exercise will be held on June 16 and focus on the issues of the two services' cooperation in neutralizing the terrorist holding captive a sea vessel.

In particular, "the special units will work on medical evacuation and rescue of the hostages staying afloat following shooting and fire resulting from a bomb explosion by the terrorists", said the public relations center.

The exercise will involve two helicopters, eight ships, including two Russian ships, the Korean commandos team and the Russian quick reaction force jointly totalling 250 personnel.

The Russian border guards' visit to Korea will last from June 15 to June 18; the delegation will be headed by Lieutenant General Vladimir Lakizo, said the Russian FSB Public Relations Service.
