LATVIAN MAYOR ACCUSES THE WEST OF NEO-COLONIALISM

RIGA, June 9 (RIA Novosti) - Aivars Lembergs, the mayor of the Latvian port of Ventspils, has accused Western nations of pursuing neo-colonial policies against his country.

"In pursuit of the interests of their multinationals, that is gaining maximum profits, rich industrialised countries have been maintaining a policy of virtual neo-colonialism against Latvia," one of the most influential Latvian politicians says in his article to the Latvijas Avize published this Wednesday.

Lembergs cites examples illustrating, in his opinion, the West's neo-colonial policy toward Latvia. Thus dealing with foreign sway, he notes that Latvia's banking system is dominated by the Scandinavians, namely, the Swedes. The Finnish concern Telia Sonera has actually become the owner of the monopoly communications company Lattelecom. As to Brussels, it channels the money of the European Union's structural funds to the areas where, according to the mayor, they are used in the interests of industrialised Western countries' monopolies.

Lembergs claims that Western monopolies are seeking with the help of corrupt Latvian mass media to overthrow the current Indulis Ensis government which, in the opinion of the mayor, "does not want to obey to them".

Lembers is certain that the Western policies toward Latvia are based on the efforts to undermine the national bourgeoisie of that country. "And this is nothing," continues Lembergs, "but a battle against the Latvian state because a national state cannot exist without national capital."
