PUTIN EXPECTS COOPERATION WITH CE HUMAN RIGHTS COMMISSIONER

MOSCOW, May 27 (RIA Novosti) - Russian President Vladimir Putin expects to establish serious cooperation with the Council of Europe (CE) Human Right Commissioner, Alvaro Gil Robles.

"We hope for serious cooperation with you, and, perhaps, for assistance in sensitive areas," the Russian president said at his meeting with the CE commissioner.

Putin believes such aid can be provided to boost Russia's democratic development.

"We are particularly attentive to the activity of such institutions, including the one that you are heading," said the president.

"This is important both for Russia as a fairly young democracy and the entire Europe, because such institutions like yours should help work out common norms and principles," said Putin.

Alvaro Gil Robles, in turn, noted that the work of the CE human rights commissioner was aimed to help those countries, which are the CE's friends and members.

The human rights commissioner is there to help the Russian and other people when they need it," he said.

The commissioner noted that such aid should always be provided in a clear and loyal way.

Let us look into the problem together and find a solution, he said to the Russian president. He also emphasized that the importance of the head of state's support for human rights protection. Yesterday, you said this clearly in your state-of-the-nation address to the Federal Assembly, said Gil Robles.

He also noted that he had to deal with far from simple issues but always tried to find an acceptable solution.
