BEIJING, May 16 (RIA Novosti) - President Nursultan Nazarbayev of Kazakhstan arrived in Beijing on a four-day official visit today on invitation of China's President Hu Jintao.

The visitor's negotiations and conferences with top Chinese officials envisage opinion exchanges on bilateral partnership and a wide range of global and regional issues.

Among matters in the agenda focus will be Sino-Kazakh fuel and power contacts, in particular, Kazakhstan-China petroleum mainline construction, say the host country's officials.

Energy partnership is of tremendous importance in bilateral links. It is making good progress in either country's interests, and has fine prospects for the future, Liu Tianjiao, China's Foreign Ministry spokesman, said yesterday. China is eager to step up oil and gas partnership with Kazakhstan, he added.

Chinese-Kazakh oil and gas links were established in September 1997 to bring into the foreground negotiations for oil mainline, with construction costs estimated at US$2.5 to 3 billion.

The two countries are together developing the Aktyubinsk oilfield in the Kazakh northwest. Chinese functionaries are stressing the stability of related team efforts.

Both countries are making preparations to launch an initial stage of mainline laying. It involves a thousand kilometre stretch from East Kazakhstan's Atasu to Alatau, a checkpoint on the Chinese-Kazakh frontier.
