KALININGRAD, May 14 (RIA Novosti's Anatoli Nilov) - Preparations for a rescuers drill jointly with NATO has begun in Kaliningrad (centre of Russia's exclave on the Baltic sea), RIA Novosti learnt on Friday from Alexander Kulchitski, head of the Kaliningrad main board for civil defence and emergency situations. "The unprecedented drill on the Baltic will be held in the 20s of June", he said.

"It has been organised under the aegis of the Russia-NATO Council. Participants on our side will be representatives of all the power structures. Representatives of 48 foreign states were planned to participate. Their number is being ascertained. The European participants are going to bring with them many officials from public organisations, especially dealing with environmental protection", he continued.

The drill will handle the elimination of effects of all sort of man-caused catastrophes dangerous to man and nature, he explained. "One version is accidents or emergencies on the D-6 oil field near the Kurland spit, a unique nature preserve". Another possible scenario of the practice emergency is a terrorist act on a field, explosion, oil spills, sea and shore pollution. Work will be done simultaneously on land and at sea", Kulchitski said.

A joint action with Lithuania will precede the June drill. "We'll hold the drill on the Nemunas river. A possible scenario is: a trainload of oil products has crashed on the railway bridge near the town of Sovetsk on the border and several railway cars have fallen into the river. Effects of the crash will have to be eliminated", Kulchuitski said.
