FIVE CHECHEN FIGHTERS KILLED BY RUSSIAN SPECIAL FORCE

GROZNY, May 14 (RIA Novosti) - Five gunmen from the Taimaskhanov and Eskiev gangs were eliminated by the Russian interior ministry's special force in the Gudermes district, Chechnya, reports the North Caucasian regional anti-terrorism centre.

"The gunmen were killed at the crossroads of the Shelkovskoy and Gudermes districts, currently the site of special operations to search for insurgents' bases," said the cnetre.

The day before, locals reported to the police about a group of armed people in the forest on the banks of the Terek River. The interior troops' reconnaissance group dispatched there discovered at 6:55 p.m. Moscow Time a camouflaged base with a dozen of fighters on its territory.

The special force mounted an attack, kllling five Chechens and scattering the others. There are no casualties among the attackers, according to the centre.

No documents have been found but certain signs revealed that the killed were members of the gangs of Taimaskhanov (the so-called emir of the Gudermes district who was eliminated by the federal forces in February, 2004) and Eskiev who is searched for nationawide.
