RALLY PARTICIPANTS, JOURNALISTS INJURED IN ADZHARIA

TBILISI, May 4 (RIA Novosti) - Up to ten people were injured in Batumi, the capital of the rebellious Georgian autonomy of Adzharia, on Tuesday, when the police dispersed a peaceful opposition protest, Novosti Georgia learned from the press service of the Our Adzharia movement.

The Georgian Rustavi 2 TV broadcast a tape showing how the rally of about 500 people demanding Abashidze's dismissal was dispersed. At first the police used fire truck water jets, then camouflaged people with batons in their hands took the scene. After the rally was dispersed, the territory in the center of Batumi, where the rally had been held, was taken by Adzharian special task force.

Participants of the rally were "students and teachers of Batumi universities", said Tamaz Diasamidze, a leader of Our Adzharia.

"They were dispersed by camouflaged bandits, while the Adzharian police, who surrounded the territory, were quietly watching", he said.

12 students participating in the rally were detained and taken somewhere in a minibus, Diasamidze maintain.

Also, on Tuesday the movement's Batumi office was raided once again, he said.

"Two members of the movement were injured during the raid. They were heavily beaten and are now being treated in Batumi hospitals," he said.

Rustavi 2 reports that broadcasting of all Georgian channels, except for the Adzharian TV, has ceased in the autonomy.

At present the Adzharian TV is the only source of information in the autonomy, Rustavi TV pointed out.

When dispersing the rally, the police beat a representative of the CNN Moscow office, and took a videotape showing how protesters were beaten up away from a crew of the Russian First Channel, the Georgian TV company reported.

They also tried to take filming equipment from representatives of another Russian TV channel, NTV, it added.
