The monument represents the victims as pearls of a broken necklace. It has been built to a design by the Berlin-based artist Andrea Zaumseil, originally from Ueberlingen, this RIA correspondent was told at Town Hall .
Near the monument is a wooden cross mounted soon after the July 2, 2002 crash. Local inhabitants would lay flowers and lit candles by its side.
"We are thankful to the Ueberlingen community and all Germans who have offered us moral support in the aftermath of the disaster, thankful for the decision to mount a monument, grateful to all designers and sculptors who have taken part in the best design competition," Rafael Baidavletov, Prime Minister of the Russian republic of Bashkortostan, said at the unveiling ceremony. He had come to Ueberlingen from the Bashkir capital of Ufa, as head of a delegation comprised of government officials and relatives of the crash victims.
The German side was represented by Ervin Teufel, Prime Minister of the Baden-Woerttemberg State; Ulrich Muller, State Minister of Environment and Transport; Ueberlingen Mayor Volkmar Weber; and activists of the Ufa-Bodensee Friendship Society; as well as police, doctors, and firemen who contributed to the search and identification of the victims of the July 2, 2002 fatal crash.
