SCO REGIONAL ANTITERROR STRUCTURE'S 2004-2006 PLAN APPROVED

TASHKENT, April 30 (RIA Novosti) - The council of the Regional Antiterror Structure of the countries of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation, whose sitting ended in Tashkent on Friday, has approved the plan for cooperation in 2004-2006.

The council considered the fulfilment of decisions taken by its first sitting in Tashkent (October 31, 2003) and the RAS current and future work, RIA Novosti learnt from RAS.

It was stressed at the meeting that coming sitting of the SCO heads-of-state council, due in Tashkent on June 17, 2004, will be crucial for the further development and strengthening of the SCO, including in opposing the new challenges and threats.

Participants unanimously condemned the recent acts of terrorism in Uzbekistan and Russia, entailing the loss of life, and expressed support for the leaderships and people of Uzbekistan and Russia in the struggle against terrorism in all its manifestations.

It was stressed that terrorism, as before, threatens regional security and stability. In this connection, members of the council noted that the further development of cooperation within the SCO RAS framework in opposing terrorism is very important and topical.

In the focus of attention of the council was work of the RAS executive committee, which became operational last January as provided for in the decisions of the SCO Moscow summit (May 2003).

The SCO RAS sitting was attended by the chiefs of the secret services of Kazakhstan, China, Kirghizia, Tajikistan, Uzbekistan. Russia was represented by Victor Komogorov, deputy director of the Federal Security Service.
