TBILISI, April 22 (RIA Novosti) - The new President of Georgia Mikhail Saakashvili has said that, the government has managed to strengthen the Georgian army after it has assumed office last December.

"When we came to power, our army only had enough ammunition for two hours of combat and food for 1.5 days. Now food supply has increased two times in all the military units. Georgia has enough strategic reserves to duly offset any armed aggression and stand on the defensive for months", the president told the parliament at a session on Thursday.

"Helicopters taken to Ukraine are returning to Georgia and before the year end we are going to buy another few helicopters abroad", Mikhail Saakashvili said. (The new Georgian government has paid the debt for the repair of its army helicopters sent to Ukraine in 1999. Soon two Mi-14 and three Mi-24 helicopters of the antisubmarine aviation will return to Georgia.) Saakashvili also said that "the former authorities had a plan for selling out Georgian military aviation as unneeded for Georgia". "We have not only preserved aviation but are making daily training flights and are going to put new planes in the inventories", the head of the Georgian state said.

He also said that within a week it is planned to bring from Greece the Georgian flagship staying there with the latest equipment. The ship will be passed to the border guards. He has also promised two more ships will be added to the present warships.
