MOSCOW, April 19 (RIA Novosti) - The Russian oil company Lukoil will get down to developing the Western Qurna-2 field as soon as the situation in Iraq is stabilized, company president Vagit Alekperov told an extended meeting of the learned council of the Russian Civil Service Academy.

"With support of the Russian president and the government, Lukoil goes on strengthening its positions in Iraq," Alekperov said.

To him, the company has recently concluded a big contract for the supply of oil products to Iraq. In addition, Lukoil is the first Russian company to have concluded a contract for the survey and development of gas fields in Saudi Arabia.

In the opinion of Alekperov, these contracts are evidence of Russia's return to the Middle East. "Not the military but economic interests are the driving force of the process now," he added.
