ROME, April 15 (RIA Novosti) - Representatives of the left-wing opposition parties demand from the Italian government immediate withdrawal of the national military contingent from Iraq.

Gennaro Migliori, head of the international section of the Communist Reform Party, told RIA Novosti that "the news of the slaughter of an Italian hostage in Iraq has only strengthened our confidence that in order to resolve the crisis an immediate withdrawal of the occupation force, including the Italian contingent, from Iraq is required".

"This human tragedy has clearly shown that the war in Iraq is a big mistake. Moreover, the Italian government has deceived the public saying that our military would partake in a peace-making mission. It has nothing to do with the present activities of the occupation forces in Iraq. We have actually been faced with a violation of the Italian constitution", Migliore said.

Commenting on the proposal of Italian Foreign Minister Franco Frattini to adopt a new UN resolution on Iraq, Migliore stressed that the condition for its adoption is the replacement of the force of occupation by forces of the countries which have not participated in the present international operation.

The Italian Greens are also for the immediate withdrawal of the Italian military contingent from Iraq. One of their leaders, Laura Cima said in a RIA Novosti interview that the Italian government must eventually conduct its own policy in Iraq without heeding the United States.

"The barbarous slaughter of our compatriot in Iraq puts on the agenda the soonest ending of this bloodshed and the withdrawal of all our troops from Iraq", Cima said. "Look how many people, including women and children, have been killed in el-Falluja. If things go on like that, power will not be passed to the Iraqi authorities on June 30, which will mean total failure".

Laura Cima has spoken up for open, rather than secret, negotiations with the moderate forces of Iraqi resistance. "The Italian government must conduct a more intelligent policy, demonstrate its will in the search of other solutions. Then, such tragedies like the slaughter of the Italian hostage will not happen", Cima stressed.

Representatives of the Italian Communists and the Greens also told RIA Novosti that they will demand from the government an investigation of the circumstances of kidnapping Italians in Iraq, particularly today's information on the kidnapping of two Italian secret agents, who have allegedly been set free. "There are too many mysteries in this case", Cima said.
