TEHERAN, April 11 (RIA Novosti) - Iran and Turkmenistan have signed an agreement on the joint use of the Druzhba water reservoir located on the Iranian-Turkmenian border.

As the Iranian Foreign Ministry reported on Sunday, the document defines a share for the use of Druzhba water resources, which equals 410 million cubic meters of water for each state.

On Saturday the states initiated the process of filling the reservoir with water; its total capacity amounts to 1,200 million cubic meters of water.

The construction and use of the Druzhba water reservoir aim to prevent mud slides, irrigate agricultural lands and provide drinkable water.

The water reservoir is located 260 kilometers to the north-west of the city of Mashhad having a population of a million people (an administrative center of the north-eastern Iranian province of Khorasan bordering on Turkmenistan and Afghanistan). The parties have spent $168 million on the project's implementation.

The other day, President of Iran Mohammad Khatami and President of Turkmenistan Saparmurat Niyazov expressed satisfaction with the commencement of the project's implementation and said they were interested in developing and strengthening bilateral cooperation in various fields.
