ADZHARIA TENSIONS PERSIST: GEORGIAN PARLIAMENTARY LEADER

BATUMI, MARCH 17 (RIA NOVOSTI) - The situation in the Adzharian autonomy is still on edge, Speaker Nino Burdzhanadze of the Georgian parliament said to the media after long talks with Adzharian leader Aslan Abashidze in Batumi, republican capital.

"The situation was complicated, and tensions still persist, in a sense," she remarked.

The Batumi negotiations concerned the constitutional regime to be reinstated and buttressed throughout Georgia to allow elections in Adzharia and elsewhere in Georgia, added the MP.

While at the negotiation table, Mr. Abashidze said he was anxious to have a normal and objective election, she emphasized.

Ms. Burdzhanadze hopes the issues still unsettled will find their settlement as Georgia's President Mikhail Saakashvili meets with Aslan Abashidze tomorrow.

"There are baffling issues, true - but I hope the President and Mr. Abashidze will discuss them in detail, and we shall find a way out of the situation," she said.
