CHISINAU, MARCH 2, 2004 (RIA-NOVOSTI) - Moldova cannot afford a national population census, scheduled for next month, and so has to postpone it. The matter needs US$2.8 million-of which the government has secured a mere half, Marian Lupu, Economy Minister, said to today's board session of the national Statistical and Sociological Department.

The Cabinet is negotiating with prospective donor countries, he hopefully added.

Mr. Lupu thinks the census will be held, autumn next.

The latest Moldovan census, of 1989, specified the population at 4,335,000.
