U.N. TO LEAD IRAQI EFFORTS: RUSSIA'S DEPUTY FOREIGN MINISTER

NEW DELHI, JANUARY 28 (RIA Novosti correspondent Valery Sevryukov) - The United Nations ought to play central part in Iraq, and it can do so. That is Russian conviction, says Yuri Fedotov, Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs.

The UN will come to the fore on the Iraqi issue only after new approaches to the Iraqi crisis and related strategies take the upper hand, he emphasised. The United Nations is entitled to an independent role, rather than serving anyone's interests.

Now that the UN Secretary General has determined to forward an UN technical mission to Iraq, prospects of UN functionaries reappearing in that country are getting ever more topical, added the deputy minister.

An UN Security Council resolution on Iraqi mass destruction weapon programs has not been implemented to this day, though to comply with that resolution is a must, he stressed.

Whatever banned arms and materials may be tracked down in Iraq, international inspectors must confirm and certify the tentative finds. If Iraq has no such programs and R&D, their absence is to be recognised. After that, the UN Security Council is to make a resolution to regard the matter as closed, said Yuri Fedotov.
