WASHINGTON (Sputnik) - US President Joe Biden ordered US airstrikes against Iran-backed militia forces in Iraq and Syria in order to limit escalation, White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki said on Monday.
"The president's view is that it was necessary, appropriate, and deliberate action", Psaki told reporters. "These strikes [were] designed to limit the risk of escalation".

Biden Orders 'Precision' Strikes on Facilities of Iran-Backed Groups Near Syrian-Iraqi Border
The Biden administration is briefing members of Congress and sent some notifications to other staff members prior to the attack, Psaki said. She added that the United States is in close touch with its partners in the region about the situation.

Late Sunday, the Pentagon said that US military aircraft had struck facilities of KH and KSS in the Syrian-Iraqi border region in response to attacks against American interests in Iraq. According to Syrian state television, the airstrikes likely left a child killed and three people injured.

Secretary of State Antony Blinken said earlier this day that the latest US airstrikes on the border between Iraq and Syria send a strong message to Iranian-backed militias that will hopefully be received.
