The UK is similarly pushing forward. Over 50% of people in their 30s in England have received at least one COVID-19 vaccine shot in just over two weeks since the start of the vaccine rollout to their age group, the National Health Service said on Sunday.

The European Commission has approved the use of the Pfizer coronavirus vaccine in minors aged 12 and over, the EU health commissioner said on Monday.

"Member States can now choose to expand their vaccination rollout to young people," Stella Kyriakides tweeted.

The announcement by the EU’s executive arm comes three days after the European Medicines Agency green-lit the use of the vaccine in adolescents aged 12 and over, saying that benefits outweighed risks.

The Italian drug regulator Aifa gave its authorization for administering the vaccine to 12-15 year olds on Monday. Germany said last week that it wanted to make the vaccine available to everyone aged 12 and over by the end of the summer.

The Japanese government approved Pfizer's COVID-19 vaccine for ages 12 to 15 on Monday, the media reported.

According to the Japanese Kyodo news agency, this newly approved age group will not be getting the vaccine instantly as the country is still vaccinating medical staff and senior citizens. So far, an estimated 6% of the Japanese population has taken at least one shot of a vaccine, which is lower when compared to other developed nations.

Japanese Prime Minister Yoshihide Suga has promised to speed up the effort and ensure complete vaccination of the elderly before the commencement of the Tokyo Olympics in July.

In a parallel development, Japan has approved the storage guidelines for the Pfizer vaccine that will allow for month-long storage at 2-8 degrees Celsius (36-46 degrees Fahrenheit) after removal from the freezer, instead of five days.

The US pharmaceutical company had advised that 12 to 15 year olds be made eligible after a successful clinical trial including 2,260 children revealed a 100% efficacy rate, with none developing any symptom except for 18 who were given a placebo.

Earlier in the month, the United States and the European Union approved this vaccine for use within this age group.

Japan approved the Pfizer dose for persons aged 16 and above in February and has agreements for enough shots for 97 million people, while also entering supply deals with British drug maker AstraZeneca and US biotechnology firm Moderna, which have also passed the clinical test indicating its safe usage for age 12 and above.

Turkey and Greece agreed to recognize each other's COVID-19 vaccine certificates and to continue dialogue on most important bilateral issues, Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu said on Monday.

The Greek Foreign Minister tweeted a photo from his meeting with Cavusoglu and remarked that they talked about the bilateral relations, as well as regional and international developments.

Cavusoglu arrived in Greece on Sunday for a two-day visit. On the first day, he met with the members of a Turkish community in the Western Thrace region of Greece. The Greek Foreign Ministry issued a statement on this occasion, as Greece considers the community in Western Thrace to be a Muslim minority rather than a Turkish one.

On the second day, Cavusoglu had a meeting with his counterpart Dendias and Greek Prime Minister. This visit comes amid tensions between the two countries, which are linked to military and naval exercises`as well as explorations rights in the Eastern Mediterranean.

The European Commission on Monday proposed that fully vaccinated individuals should not be subject to further COVID-19 testing and quarantine measures 14 days after receiving their final dose.

"What we are proposing today is, first, we propose no travel-related testing or quarantine for fully vaccinated or recovered persons. This is already a practice in many member states, and it should be independent from where you travel from or where you're travelling to. We propose a common understand of who a fully vaccinated person is in the context of travel. That means, 14 days after having received the last dose," Didier Reynders, European commissioner for justice, said at a press briefing.

Italy has fully vaccinated more than 11.87 million citizens, or 20.03 percent of its population, against the coronavirus disease, according to data from the country's health ministry, released on Monday.

A week ago the 59-million country passed the 10 million threshold. As of now, almost 34.5 million doses have been administered.

Meanwhile, the spread of COVID-19 in Italy continues to go down, according to the health authorities. On Sunday, the country registered the lowest death toll since October 14 — 44 fatalities. The numbers of hospitalized patients, as well as those in intensive care also gradually go down. The authorities link these improvements with the successful vaccination rollout, which picked up pace this month.

Starting Monday, three Italian regions — Sardinia, Molise and Friuli-Venezia Giulia — were designated as the so-called white zones, where almost all lockdown measures have been lifted with exception of mandatory masks, social distancing and regular disinfection of buildings. This continues the trend of gradual lifting of the lockdown across the country.

Italy launched its vaccination drive on 27 December and aims to have 80 percent of the population immune by late September.
