The sanctions extend to the State Administrative Council (SAC), the government of the country's military junta, including four of its members as well as nine ministers and three adult children of previously sanctioned high-ranking SAC members.
The individuals were placed on the US Specially Designated Nationals and Blocked Persons (SDN). The SDN List, managed by the Office of Foreign Assets Control, is designed to place sanctions or embargo measures on designated terrorists, officials and beneficiaries of certain authoritarian regimes, and international criminals.
Canada has also imposed additional sanctions on Myanmar officials and entities.
"Marc Garneau, Minister of Foreign Affairs, today announced additional sanctions against 16 individuals and 10 entities under the Special Economic Measures (Burma) Regulations in response to the military’s ongoing brutal repression of the people of Myanmar and their refusal to take steps to restore democracy," Global Affairs said in a statement.
The sanctions were imposed in coordination with the United States and the United Kingdom and just days after the European Union announced similar measures, the statement said.
The sanctioned individuals include State Administration Council Members Gen. Maung Maung Kyaw and Lt. Gen. Moe Myint Tun. The Canadian government also placed embargoes on Myanmar’s state-owned gems, timber and pearl companies.
The sanctions freeze all assets the designated individuals may hold in Canada and prohibit Canadians to engage in financial dealings with them.
The announcement comes amid controversial actions taken by the military government of Myanmar against its own civilian population. At least 774 civilians have been killed in crackdowns against pro-democracy protesters following the February 1 coup.
