France expects to receive nearly 3 million COVID-19 vaccine doses next week, Secretary of State to the Minister of Economy and Finance Agnes Pannier-Runacher said on Saturday.

"We expect big shipments next week. Almost 3 million doses will arrive in France, as confirmed by several laboratories," Pannier-Runacher told Europe 1.

The secretary of state added that the immunization strategy in France was largely based on the use of the Pfizer/BioNTech vaccine.

The European country will be able to hit its target and "vaccinate 30 million people by the end of June," Pannier-Runacher noted.

Since the beginning of its mass vaccination drive in late December, France has inoculated 7.5 million people with the first dose, and 2.6 million with the second one.

France is mobilizing 90,000 police officers and gendarmes this weekend to ensure compliance with coronavirus restrictions amid rising new cases and intensive care admissions, local media reported Saturday.

According to the BFMTV broadcaster, controls have been tightened since Friday at train stations, airports, and tollbooths. All travel further than 6.2 miles has been restricted; shops and schools have been closed in the 19 hardest-hit regions.

Meanwhile, the country is experiencing "an exponential phase," the head of the intensive care unit at Cochin hospital in Paris, Jean-Paul Mira, told the broadcaster.

"In four to six weeks, we will be overwhelmed," Mira said as quoted by BFMTV.

According to the French health authority, the number of cases nationwide increased by 17 percent as of March 25 with nearly 30,000 new cases on average each day.

The Philippines is introducing a so-called enhanced community quarantine (ECQ) in the National Capital Region and its surrounding areas in a bid to contain the growing spread of COVID-19, the CNN Philippines broadcaster reported on Saturday, citing presidential spokesperson Harry Roque.

The ECQ will come into force on 29 March and last through 4 April. Movement in the NCR Plus region, which includes Metropolitan Manila, Bulacan, Cavite, Laguna, and Rizal, will be restricted due to a spike in COVID-19 cases, Roque told reporters, as cited by the media outlet.

The government official added that only "authorized persons outside residence" would be permitted to enter or leave the NCR Plus for work, delivery of humanitarian aid, and other essential purposes.

The ECQ will also include a curfew from 6.00 p.m. to 5.00 a.m. (10:00 to 21:00 GMT) and ban indoor dining in restaurants.

To date, the Philippines has confirmed over 712,000 COVID-19 cases and nearly 13,150 related fatalities.

Greece is putting out feelers about possible production of Moderna and Sputnik V coronavirus vaccines on its soil, national media reported on Saturday, citing sources.

According to the Ta Nea daily, the country is currently in contact with foreign companies with regard to cooperation in vaccine production. The United States’ Moderna shots and Russia’s Sputnik V are said to be of greatest interest.

The main obstacle is reportedly the cost of production, which requires 100-200 million euros ($118-236 million) to launch as well as agreements with patent owners. Pharma companies are usually reluctant to share patents unless stringent conditions are in place to guarantee their protection, the Greek daily noted.

In addition, the project will require a great number of high-qualified personnel.

A solution may be to create a consortium of Greek companies that will jointly undertake the capital-intensive project.

The Serum Institute of India has started trials for a version of the Novavax COVID-19 vaccine with a view to rolling out the shots by September, CEO Adar Poonawalla said on Saturday.

The Serum Institute of India is one of the nation’s largest pharma companies, which is currently manufacturing own version of the AstraZeneca/Oxford vaccine, dubbed Covishield. It also has vaccine partnership with US company Novavax.

"Covovax trials finally begin in India; the vaccine is made through a partnership with @Novavax and @SerumInstIndia. It has been tested against African and UK variants of #COVID19 and has an overall efficacy of 89%. Hope to launch by September 2021!" Poonawalla tweeted.

The Serum Institute of India is expected to test the vaccine’s safety in a trial involving 1,600 people. Volunteers, aged between 18 and 99, must be healthy people who have no acute diseases and have never had COVID-19.

According to Indian media, trial participants will be randomly divided to receive two doses of either Novavax's NVX-CoV2373 vaccine, also referred to as Covovax, or a placebo 22 days apart. This study will show whether Covovax has the same ability to prompt an immune response as the original Novavax vaccine.

Brazil has unveiled two indigenous COVID-19 vaccine candidates in one day amid a record rise in daily infections and deaths.

First, Sao Paulo's Butantan Institute announced on Friday that it would seek approval for its first homegrown vaccine, Butanvac, with a view to beginning inoculations in July.

Separately, national regulator Anvisa said that it had received a request to start phase 1 and phase 2 trials of a vaccine dubbed Versamune. The vaccine was developed by the University of Sao Paulo Ribeirao Preto in conjunction with Brazilian company Farmacore and the United States’ PDS Biotechnology.

The announcement comes as the country hit daily all-time highs of 3,650 deaths and 100,158 infections this week. Brazil is now second only to the US in terms of coronavirus cases and fatalities, with a total of over 12.4 million registered infections and over 307,000 confirmed coronavirus-related deaths.
