The UK-Swedish pharmaceutical giant AstraZeneca said on Sunday that it had found no evidence of increased risk of blood clots from its COVID-19 vaccine after conducting a review of safety data of over 17 million inoculated people across the European Union and the United Kingdom.

"A careful review of all available safety data of more than 17 million people vaccinated in the European Union (EU) and UK with COVID-19 Vaccine AstraZeneca has shown no evidence of an increased risk of pulmonary embolism, deep vein thrombosis (DVT) or thrombocytopenia, in any defined age group, gender, batch or in any particular country," AstraZeneca said in a press release.

The European Union can meet its COVID-19 vaccination campaign targets in the first quarter of the year despite delays in the supply of the AstraZeneca vaccine doses, EU Internal Market Commissioner Thierry Breton said on Sunday.

"Delays in AstraZeneca's deliveries do not mean there will be delays in the first quarter of the vaccination program," Breton told French broadcaster Europe 1, adding that "Pfizer is producing more than expected" and describing this as an "opportunity to compensate" for the supply shortfalls.

On March 10, the European Commission said it had reached an agreement with Pfizer-BioNTech pharmaceutical duo for an additional 4 million doses of their COVID-19 vaccine to be delivered by the end of this month.

With the supply crisis going on in the EU, some member states lose trust in Brussels and decide to make early orders separately. Thus, Hungary turned to Russia and China in a bid to ensure a sufficient number of vaccine doses. As a result, the country has the best results in the EU in terms of vaccinated people, far ahead of all the heavyweight EU countries.

The next supplies of AstraZeneca's COVID-19 vaccine to the Czech Republic will be reduced by 40 percent, the country's Health Ministry said on Sunday, citing the UK-Swedish pharmaceutical company.

On Friday, AstraZeneca confirmed a shortfall in shipments of doses to the whole of the European Union. The company explained that the shortfall was due to "lower-than-expected output from the production process" and asserted readiness to compensate for part of the shortfall with vaccines from the international supply network. AstraZeneca aims to provide the European Union with 100 million doses in the first half of the year, 30 million of which are due to be delivered in the first quarter.

"We have our first results from the negotiations with the manufacturers of the AstraZeneca vaccine. According to them, the next vaccine supplies to the Czech Republic will be reduced by 40 percent. As such, we will receive 9,600 doses instead of 16,800 in the coming week; 10,800 instead of 88,000 from 22 March to 28 March. At the end of March, we will receive 99,800 doses of the vaccine," the ministry said in a statement.

On Saturday, Czech Prime Minister Andrej Babis told reporters that he and his four counterparts from Austria, Bulgaria, Latvia and Slovenia sent a letter to the heads of the European Commission and Council, pointing out that the deliveries of vaccine doses to individual EU member states were not being implemented on "an equal basis."

According to Babis, the current vaccine supplies are not sufficient to vaccinate 70 percent of the adult EU population, therefore, jabs should be allocated proportionally to the size of each member state's population.

The German biotechnology firm BioNTech has set up an alliance of 13 firms designed to speed up the production of the coronavirus vaccine it develops jointly with the US company Pfizer to compensate for the shortages of doses, the Wall Street Journal newspaper reported.

BioNTech negotiated with such companies as Swiss Novartis, German Merck Group, and French Sanofi, which are Pfizer's rivals in the vaccine development, to join the project among other firms. The talks on the initiative were conducted in coordination with Pfizer.

Overall, BioNTeach envisages the production of 2 billion doses of its vaccine against COVID-19 for the deliveries in 2021 within the framework of the new partnership. The companies engaged in the alliance would participate in all stages of vaccine production. The alliance will produce nearly half of the global volume of the active ingredient supply for the vaccine.

In early February, BioNTech said that it had planned to produce 2 billion doses of its coronavirus vaccine in 2021 due to an increased global demand. Notably, Pfizer/BioNTech vaccine was the first to be authorized for use in the European Union, which launched a mass vaccination campaign in late December 2020. However, the companies have faced criticism from several member states of the bloc over their vaccine supply cuts due to reported production capacity issues.

The COVID-19 AstraZeneca vaccine has been temporarily differed from administration in Ireland, the country's health officials announced on Sunday, a day after new information emerged on blood clotting incidents in inoculated people in Norway.

"The decision to temporarily suspend use of the AstraZeneca Covid-19 vaccine was based on new information from Norway that emerged late last night. This is a precautionary step," Irish Minister for Health Stephen Donnelly wrote on his Twitter.

Even though it has not been concluded whether there is a link between the vaccine and the cases of blood, Ireland’s National Immunisation Advisory Committee (NIAC) has recommended the "temporary deferral" of the AstraZeneca vaccine as a "precautionary principle" in a press release published earlier on Sunday.

So far, over 110,000 doses of the AstraZeneca vaccine have been administered in Ireland.

The NIAC is due to meet again this morning and a further statement will be released later on.

Earlier this week, several European countries, including Denmark, Iceland and Norway, halted the rollout of the AstraZeneca vaccine after Austria said it was investigating the death of a vaccinated woman from multiple thromboses. The European Medicines Agency said there was currently no indication that the reported negative effects had been caused by the vaccination.
