Moscow has expelled an Estonian diplomat in response to a similar move by Tallinn, the Russian Foreign Ministry said on Thursday.
Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said: "Probably, the new Estonian government has decided to show how loyal it is to its supervisors in Washington and Brussels and declared a Russian diplomat persona non grata. He has been dealing with questions regarding culture and education - precisely the fields where cooperation between Russia and Estonia remains."
Zakharova added that Estonia has expelled a Russian diplomat without any reason and Russia summoned Estonia's ambassador to register its displeasure about the matter.
Earlier this month, three diplomats from Poland, Germany and Sweden were expelled from Russia after participating in unauthorised rallies in support of jailed opposition activist Alexei Navalny. In retaliation, Warsaw, Berlin and Stockholm expelled Russian diplomats.
