UN Holds 31st General Assembly Special Session in Response to Coronavirus Pandemic

The United Nations has described the COVID-19 pandemic as a humanitarian, socio-economic, security, and human rights crisis. Since the pandemic erupted at the end of 2019, more than 1.5 million people around the globe have lost their lives, according to Johns Hopkins University.

Sputnik International is live from the 31st United Nations General Assembly Special Session on the Coronavirus Disease (COVID-19) Pandemic.

The session will be held in a virtual format. Among the topics to be discussed on Friday are vaccine distribution and development, the socio-economic impact of the pandemic, and the UN system's health and humanitarian response.

On Thursday, a general debate focused on the experiences of member states. Among the leaders addressing the sessions were Japan's Prime Minister Yoshihide Suga and French President Emmanuel Macron.
