Live Updates: Russian Peacekeepers Inspecting All Vehicles in Lachin Corridor

MOSCOW (Sputnik) – Russian peacekeepers are inspecting all the vehicles passing through the Lachin corridor, which links Azerbaijan's breakaway region of Nagorno-Karabakh with Armenia, to make sure they are not transporting explosives and weapons, the Russian Defenсe Ministry said.
"Officers of the peacekeeping contingent are inspecting all the vehicles passing through the observation posts: whether they are transporting explosives and weapons, or not", the ministry said in a statement.

Russian military police are also patrolling the whole road to Stepanakert, the capital of the self-proclaimed Republic of Artsakh.

The reopening of the road through the Lachin corridor allows local residents to transport various goods from Armenia to Nagorno-Karabakh and vice versa.

Last week, Yerevan and Baku agreed to a ceasefire in Nagorno-Karabakh, putting an end to the six-week war over the disputed area. The agreement resulted in the loss of most territories controlled by the Armenian-dominated Republic of Artsakh and envisions the deployment of 1,960 Russian peacekeepers to the region.

Over 1,200 refugees returned to Nagorno-Karabakh from Armenia on Thursday, the Russian Defense Ministry said.

"On 25/11, the Senate will consider a resolution proposing recognition by the French Republic of the Republic of Artsakh [Armenian name for Nagorno-Karabakh]. Only its independence can durably guarantee the rights and freedoms of the populations of Nagorno-Karabakh in the face of Turkish Islamist expansionism," senator Bruno Retailleau tweeted late on Wednesday.

In late September, a few days after the military clashes broke out in the ethnic Armenian enclave of Nagorno-Karabakh, French President Emanuel Macron slammed Turkey's backing Azerbaijan in the conflict, and accused Ankara of sending Syrian jihadist militants to fight in the disputed area.

The French response raises existing tensions between both countries, which also involve Eastern Mediterranean and recent unrest in France over the Islamist threat following a series of terrorist attacks. The latter occurred in the wake of reprint and continuous usage of cartoons depicting Islamic prophet Mohammad, which is considered as blasphemy by the Muslims.

The French Armenian community is the largest in the European Union and the third largest in the world; while France along with Russia and the United States, co-chaired the Minsk Group, designated to encourage a peaceful settlement of the armed conflict in Nagorno-Karabakh through negotiations.
