    The pandemic has claimed over 1,240,000 lives worldwide so far, while the number of infected has surpassed 49 million, according to Johns Hopkins University.

    At the moment, the countries with the highest number of infections are the US (9.7 million cases, 236,000 deaths), India (8.4 million cases, around 125,000 deaths), and Brazil (5.6 million cases, 162,000 deaths).

    In Europe, France has the highest tally with 1.7 million infected, while the UK has the highest death toll in the region with over 48,500 fatalities. The growing numbers have forced Paris, Berlin, and London to re-introduce lockdowns, as European countries are trying to curb the disease.

      French Parliament Approves Extending Coronavirus Restrictions Until February 2021

      MOSCOW (Sputnik) - The French parliament has voted in favor of extending the state of emergency introduced amid the coronavirus pandemic until February 2021.

      The National Assembly (lower house of the French parliament) adopted the measure in the final reading on Saturday, with 154 against 38 votes. The vote was broadcast by the parliament's channel (LCP) on Twitter.

      Earlier, the extension was approved by both the Senate and the National Assembly, in the first reading.

      On Friday, France reported a record high daily increase of coronavirus cases (more than 60,400). The total number of coronavirus cases registered in France has surpassed 1.6 million, while the country's COVID-19 death toll stands at over 39,800.

      MOSCOW (Sputnik) - Another 74 people have died from the coronavirus disease in the Russian capital over the past 24 hours, the Russian COVID-19 response center said on Saturday.

      "In Moscow, 74 patients with confirmed pneumonia diagnosis and positive coronavirus test results died," the center said in an update.

      Moscow's cumulative death toll from COVID-19 has now reached 7,289.

      Russia Reports 20,369 COVID-19 Cases in 24 Hours

      MOSCOW (Sputnik) - Russia has registered 20,369 new COVID-19 cases, taking the total to 1,753,836, the federal response centre said Saturday.

      This is slightly less than the record of 20,582 cases recorded the previous day. Some 16,803 have been discharged with recoveries.

      Moscow has been consistently reporting the highest daily increase in infections of all regions. On Saturday, it posted 5,892 new cases. St. Petersburg reported 1,258 new cases while the Moscow Region witnessed 629.
