Nobel Prize in Literature Awarded to American Poet Louise Gluck

The 77-year-old US poet and essayist, originally from New York City, has received numerous awards in the course of her career, including the Pulitzer Prize in 1993. Her notable works include The Triumph of Achilles and The Wild Iris.

The 2020 Nobel Prize in Literature has been awarded to American poet Louise Gluck for her "unmistakable poetic voice that with austere beauty makes individual existence universal", the Swedish Academy said on Thursday.

Gluck, born in 1943, has won many prestigious awards in the United States, including the Pulitzer Prize.

Her first literary work, titled Firstborn, was published in 1968 and received positive acclaim.

She rose to prominence in the literary world by publishing The Triumph of Achilles in 1985 - a collection of poems, some of which appear in poetry anthologies and college courses.

In 1992, her work titled The Wild Iris consolidated her reputation and brought her the Pulitzer Prize a year later.

Gluck, 77, is currently a professor of English at Yale University.
