"China has achieved significant results in the prevention and control of the epidemic ... but we are well aware that the nations' well-being and health are interrelated with the Chinese people. The top diplomat thanked everyone who had, on their part, provided tremendous assistance to China in the fight against the epidemic.

Wang noted that to date, China provided humanitarian and financial aid to 150 countries and international organisations.

John Nkengasong, the director of the Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), said on Monday that it was too soon to speak of a victory over the COVID-19 pandemic on the continent despite the fewer reported cases.

"We are seeing tendency towards a decrease over the last couple of weeks, but that doesn't represent victory ... There is absolutely no room for complacency on the continent", Nkengasong said during a virtual briefing.

According to the CDC head, the African countries have so far recorded over 1.4 million COVID-19 cases and about 35,000 related deaths.

South Africa remains the worst-hit country on the continent, with over 670,000 confirmed cases and 16,000 fatalities.

Michael Ryan, the executive director of the World Health Organisation's (WHO) Health emergencies program, said on Monday that the current death toll from the coronavirus disease was likely underestimated.

"Just to reassure you, there are no people who are suffering from accidents being counted as COVID cases ... When you count anything, you never count it perfectly, but I can assure that the current numbers are likely an underestimate of the true toll of COVID rather than anything else", Ryan said during a virtual briefing.

The number of COVID-19 related deaths worldwide is approaching 1 million (996,342), according to the WHO. The total number of confirmed cases stands at 33,034,598.

Russia is unlikely to see a pessimistic scenario with regards to the COVID-19 pandemic as the country has enough auxiliary hospital beds and the virus gets weaker as it spreads, Aleksandr Gorelov, the deputy head of the Central Research Institute of Epidemiology, a part of the country's consumer rights and human welfare watchdog, Rospotrebnadzor, told Sputnik on Monday.

"Russia has many auxiliary beds, especially in Moscow. So, I do not think we will face such a pessimistic scenario, since, after all, the virus weakens as the infection spreads", Gorelov said.

He added that Rospotrebnadzor's recommendations to various organizations were up to date and included all the necessary rules.

Russia has confirmed a total of over 1.1 million COVID-19 cases, including 20,385 fatalities.

The agreement between the World Health Organisation (WHO) and its partners will result in 120 million rapid coronavirus tests made available for low- and middle-income countries, WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said Monday.

"Last week, we reached an important milestone, in which WHO issued the first emergency use listing for a quality antigen based rapid diagnostic test and we expect other rapid tests to follow. I am pleased to announce that thanks to an agreement between WHO and partners here today and others a substantial proportion of these rapid tests, 120 million, will be made available to low- and middle-income countries", Tedros told a virtual press briefing.

The WHO chief noted that the move would help to scale up testing, particularly in hard-to-reach areas with insufficient lab capacities and not enough trained health workers to carry out PCR tests.

MOSCOW (Sputnik) - Russia's coronavirus response centers and the nation as a whole should pay special attention to the epidemiological situation, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said on Monday, as the country is witnessing a growing number of daily infections.

"Firstly, all regions have different situations and, of course, the governors should act depending on the situation and that's what they do. That is why they were granted special powers during the pandemic, which they are implementing. Indeed the number of those infected is growing, this is a subject for special attention. The main thing is that not only response centers should pay special attention, but also citizens, who must significantly increase the level of concern for their epidemiological safety and fulfill all the necessary prescriptions, wear masks, gloves and so on," Peskov told reporters.
