While the US is still the most affected country (6.2 million infected, over 189,000 deaths), India has surpassed Brazil in terms of the overall number of infected, reaching 4.2 million cases. Brazil has confirmed 4.13 million incidents. At the same time, the death toll in India is 71,642, which is lower than in Brazil (126,650).

MOSCOW (Sputnik) - In the past 24 hours, almost 1,500 new coronavirus cases were confirmed in Germany, bringing the total number of cases to 252,298 according to the Robert Koch Institute, which is responsible for disease control and prevention in Germany.
Over the same 24-hour period Germany confirmed four new deaths from COVID-19, the country’s total coronavirus death toll now stands at 9,329.
On Monday, Germany confirmed 814 new cases, but no new coronavirus-related deaths were reported. On Sunday, Germany reported 988 new cases and one new death from COVID-19.
The Robert Koch Institute says the increase in COVID-19 cases in Germany has stabilized in the past week and the current development is "positive."
A week ago, the total number of confirmed coronavirus cases in Germany stood at around 242,400 while the country’s total COVID-19 death toll was nearly 9,300.
CAIRO (Sputnik) - The number of recorded cases of the novel coronavirus disease (COVID-19) in Egypt has topped 100,000, the country's Health Ministry said in a statement.
"The total number of coronavirus cases in Egypt is 100,041 people," ministry spokesman Khaled Mugahed said in a statement obtained by Sputnik.
Mugahed said that overall, 5,541 patients had died from COVID-19 and more than 79,000 people had recovered.
MOSCOW (Sputnik) - Brazil has confirmed 10,273 new coronavirus cases in the past 24 hours, more than 300 new deaths from COVID-19 were registered in that period, the country’s Health Ministry informs.
Brazil's total number of confirmed coronavirus cases now stands at 4,147,794. In the past 24 hours, 310 new coronavirus-related deaths were confirmed in Brazil with the total death toll now standing at 126,960, the ministry said on Monday.
On Sunday, Brazil reported more than 14,500 new coronavirus cases and over 440 new deaths from COVID-19. On Saturday, Brazil’s health ministry reported that the death toll had surpassed 125,000.
A week ago, Brazil’s COVID-19 death toll stood at around 121,000. Thus the country has seen a weekly increase of about 6,000 coronavirus-related deaths.
According to the health ministry, 3,355,564 people have recovered from COVID-19 in Brazil.
Brazil has the second-largest coronavirus death toll of all the countries in the world and is also second in terms of the total number of confirmed cases. It is surpassed only by the United States, which has registered over 6.2 million coronavirus cases and more than 189,100 deaths from COVID-19, according to the latest data from Johns Hopkins University.
"This will not be the last pandemic. History teaches us that outbreaks and pandemics are a fact of life. But when the next pandemic comes, the world must be ready – more ready than it was this time", World Health Organisation (WHO) Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus told a virtual press briefing.
The WHO chief noted that despite considerable advances in technologies, "too many" countries have neglected their public health systems, which are essential for responding to outbreaks of infectious diseases.
"Part of every county's commitment to build back better must therefore be to invest in public health, as an investment in a healthier and safer future", Tedros stressed.
"WHO office in China and WHO headquarters have been working with regulatory authorities in China. We are in direct contact and sharing information and requirements for international approval of vaccines. So we're working together with Chinese authorities on this", Dr Mariangela Simao, the WHO assistant director general for access to medicines and health products, told a virtual press briefing.
There are two companies in China currently working on potential COVID-19 vaccines. One of them is developed by China National Biotec Group, which said earlier in September that around 50,000 people from several countries are participating in Phase 3 clinical trials. Another vaccine, which is also in Phase 3 of the trials, was created by Sinovac, which is testing the vaccine in several countries, including the United Arab Emirates, Brazil and Indonesia.
Belarusian Prime Minister Roman Golovchenko got inoculated with the Russian coronavirus vaccine and is feeling well, the prime minister's spokeswoman Alexandra Isaeva said on Monday.
According to Isaeva, Golovchenko got vaccinated after last week's talks with Russian Prime Minister Mikhail Mishustin.

"It will review the convening of the Emergency Committee, the declaration of a public health emergency of international concern, the role and functioning of international IHR focal points and will examine the progress made in implementing the recommendations of previous International Health Regulation review committees", Tedros added.
RABAT (Sputnik) – Morocco has locked down and imposed a curfew in Casablanca, the country's major port city and one of the largest financial centres in Africa, due to a recent surge in COVID-19 cases.
According to a Sunday epidemiological bulletin, the Health Ministry of Morocco registered 2,234 new coronavirus cases, with 773 in Casablanca, which is significantly higher than the 1,555 new cases a day prior.
"These measures will be enforced for the next 14 days", the government said in a statement.
According to the authorities, markets are required to shut down at 3 p.m. local time (14:00 GMT), and shops and restaurants must close at 8 p.m. A nighttime curfew is in place from 10 p.m. to 5 a.m.
MOSCOW (Sputnik) - Slightly over 0.6 percent of all the people living in Russia have contracted COVID-19, Anna Popova, the head of the public health watchdog Rospotrebnadzor, said on Monday.
"Slightly over 0.6 percent of the total population are confirmed to have contracted the novel coronavirus infection in the past months, since January 1", Popova said at an All-Russian Congress on Infectious Diseases.
Russia's COVID-19 herd immunity studies show that the share of people immune to the coronavirus ranges from 4 percent to 50 percent in different regions across the country, Popova added.
"We launched herd immunity monitoring in late June ... As of today, we see that the share [of immune people] ranges from 4 percent to 50 percent in different regions", Popova said
Popova also said that around 3 million individuals who have been in contact with COVID-19 patients have been placed under medical observation since the beginning of the pandemic.
MOSCOW (Sputnik) - Russia has registered 5,185 COVID-19 cases in the past 24 hours (5,195 yesterday), taking the cumulative total to 1,030,690, the country's coronavirus response centre said on Monday.
"Over the past 24 hours, Russia has confirmed 5,185 COVID-19 cases in 84 regions, of which 1,223 (23.6 percent) have been detected with people showing no clinical symptoms", the response centre said in a statement, adding that the total count has reached 1,030,690.
MOSCOW (Sputnik) - Almost 500 businesses have gone bankrupt in Japan due to the economic hardships caused by the ongoing coronavirus pandemic since February, the media reported on Monday.
As of Friday, the number of companies that filed for bankruptcy or launched legal liquidation procedures reached 489 in Japan, NHK reported, citing the research firm Teikoku Databank.
Businesses operating in the food, accommodation, and clothing industries were affected the most, according to Teikoku Databank.

NEW DELHI (Sputnik) - India has overtaken Brazil in terms of COVID-19 cases to become the world's second worst-hit country, as the total of confirmed infections has crossed 4.2 million, according to fresh data from Johns Hopkins University and the Indian Ministry of Health and Family Welfare.
India has recorded 4,204,613 COVID-19 cases since the onset of the pandemic, while Brazil, which now ranks third, has confirmed more than 4.13 million cases. The United States remains the worst-affected country with over 6.2 million confirmed cases, according to Johns Hopkins University.
