COVID-19 Live Updates: Global Number of Confirmed Cases Surpasses 27 Mln

The coronavirus continues spreading across the world, topping 27 million infected globally, according to Johns Hopkins University. New outbreaks have been reported across Europe, with many countries tightening pandemic restrictions and border control to curb the infection, leading to protests in London, Edinburgh, Berlin, and Paris.

The United States remains the worst-hit country in the world, with over 6.27 million infected and more than 188,900 dead.

Brazil is second with more than 4.13 million cases and over 126,600 deaths from the virus, while India is approaching the Latin American country with over 4.11 million infected and a death toll of more than 70,600, showing the highest daily increase in the number of cases.

MOSCOW (Sputnik) - Germany confirmed 814 new COVID-19 cases in the past 24 hours, bringing the total number of confirmed cases to 250,799 according to the Robert Koch Institute, which is responsible for disease control and prevention in Germany.

In the past 24 hours, no new coronavirus-related deaths were confirmed in Germany. The country's total coronavirus death toll currently stands at 9,325.

On Sunday, Germany reported 988 new cases and one new death from COVID-19.

The Robert Koch Institute says the increase in COVID-19 cases in Germany has stabilized in the past week.

A week ago, the total number of confirmed coronavirus cases in Germany stood at around 242,400 while the country’s total COVID-19 death toll was nearly 9,300.

MOSCOW (Sputnik) - The global coronavirus toll has surpassed the milestone of 27 million cases, US-based Johns Hopkins University said on Monday.

The exact case count is at least 27,002,224, according to the situation report.

This includes 882,053 coronavirus-related fatalities and more than 18 million recoveries.

MOSCOW (Sputnik) - The number of coronavirus cases in South Korea has increased to 21,296, with 119 of them confirmed over the past 24 hours, the health ministry's Korea Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (KCDC) said on Monday.

This marks the fifth consecutive day of the daily increase in cases remaining below 200 in South Korea.

"As of 0:00, 7 September 2020, the total number of confirmed cases is 21,296 (including 2,903 imported cases), of which 16,297 cases have been discharged from isolation. There are 108 new local cases, 11 new imported cases, and 2 new death", the KCDC said in a daily update.

The death toll from COVID-19 in South Korea has thus reached 336.

The majority of the newly-detected cases — 47 — are concentrated in the capital city of Seoul, while the eastern metropolitan city of Daegu accounts for the highest cumulative toll of cases, 7,084.

MOSCOW (Sputnik) - More than 40 new coronavirus cases and nine new deaths from COVID-19 were registered in Australia's southeastern state of Victoria in the past 24 hours, the Victoria Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) reports as the state prepares for a gradual easing of coronavirus restrictions.

A day earlier, there were 63 new cases and 5 new coronavirus-related deaths in Victoria. The state's total death toll stands at over 660, while the total number of confirmed cases has surpassed 19,500.

Victoria Premier Dan Andrews said on Sunday that coronavirus restrictions were going to be eased in the state starting from 13 September.

According to the Victoria government website, the first step of restriction easing will include expanded social interaction. The second step will include "social bubbles", visitors and a staged return of education, as well as the reopening of outdoor pools and playgrounds.

In metropolitan Melbourne, Stage 4 restrictions will be in force for another fortnight beyond 13 September.

MOSCOW (Sputnik) - More than 14,500 new coronavirus cases and over 440 new deaths from COVID-19 were confirmed in Brazil in the past 24 hours, the country’s Health Ministry informs.

Brazil's total number of confirmed coronavirus cases stands at 4,137,521. In the past 24 hours, 14,521 new cases were registered in the county, the health ministry said on Sunday. Over the same 24-hour period, 447 new coronavirus-related deaths were confirmed in Brazil.

Brazil’s total coronavirus death toll now stands at 126,650. On Saturday, Brazil’s health ministry reported that the death toll had surpassed 125,000.

A week ago, Brazil's COVID-19 death toll surpassed 120,800. Thus the country has seen a weekly increase of about 6,000 coronavirus-related deaths.

More than 3.3 million people have recovered from COVID-19 in Brazil.

MOSCOW (Sputnik) - The number of confirmed cases of the coronavirus infection in France has increased by 7,071 over the past 24 hours, bringing the country's tally to 324,777, Sante Publique, the national health agency, said on Sunday.

According to the agency, the death toll from the disease in France has reached 30,701, with 20,225 fatalities being recorded in hospitals.

Over the past week, as many as 1,704 COVID-19 patient have been admitted to hospitals, with 288 of them transferred to intensive care units, the agency added.

France is currently experiencing a second surge in COVID-19 infections, with the new daily record high of 7,379 infections registered on 28 August. In the wake of the resurgence, the government has reimposed some sanitary measures across the country, in particular, the requirement to wear face masks.

"Another 14 patients, who were diagnosed with pneumonia and tested positive for the coronavirus infection, died in Moscow", the city's coronavirus response centre said in a statement on Sunday.

In the previous day, 13 COVID-19 patients died in Moscow.

LONDON (Sputnik) – A further 2,988 people tested positive for the novel coronavirus over the last 24 hours in the United Kingdom, the highest number of daily infections since May 22, when 3,287 cases were confirmed, the Department of Health and Social Care announced on Sunday.

The government's COVID-19 dashboard shows that the total number of positive cases now stands at 347,152, while the country's death toll has risen by two to 41,551.

Sunday's official report triggered the alarm within political circles in the UK, with Health Minister Matt Hancock admitting that "the rise in the number of cases that we have seen today is concerning".

Hancock said, however, that most of the new cases had been detected among younger people, so he called on them not to allow the virus to infect their grandparents.

KIEV (Sputnik) - Ukraine has registered 2,107 new coronavirus cases, down from a record 2,836 on Saturday, and 35 related fatalities over the past 24 hours, the National Security and Defence Council's monitoring centre said on Sunday.

The updated data takes the cumulative tally to 135,894 cases and 2,846 deaths. The number of recoveries increased by 578 to 62,227 over the given period.

MOSCOW (Sputnik) - Russia has registered 5,195 COVID-19 cases in the past 24 hours, bringing the cumulative total to 1,025,505, the country's coronavirus response centre said on Sunday.

"Over the past 24 hours, Russia has confirmed 5,195 COVID-19 cases in 84 regions, of which 1,156 (22.2 percent) have been detected with people showing no clinical symptoms", the response centre said in a statement.

MOSCOW (Sputnik) - Coronavirus restrictions in the southeastern Australian state of Victoria will start to be eased in one week, Victoria Premier Dan Andrews said on Sunday.

"Currently, Melbourne is in Stage 4 restrictions. From 11:59pm on 13 September, we'll take our First Step towards COVID Normal. Regional Victoria, currently in Stage 3 restrictions, will be able to jump to the Second Step of reopening", Andrews said in a statement, released on Twitter.

According to the Victoria government website, the first step in restriction easing will include expanded social interaction. The second step will include "social bubbles”, visitors, and a staged return of education, as well as the reopening of outdoor pools and playgrounds.

"If we go too far too soon, the modeling also tells us we'd be on track for a third wave by mid-November. ... It's why, even as we release a roadmap for reopening it's got to be done in safe, steady and sustainable steps", Andrews stressed.

The country's total COVID-19 death toll is 9,325. In the past 24 hours, only one new death from COVID-19 was confirmed in Germany, according to the latest data from the Robert Koch Institute.
