According to the World Health Organisation (WHO), the global coronavirus death toll has surpassed 767,000 people, with the number of cases worldwide exceeding 21.5 million.

The number of cases of the novel coronavirus disease (COVID-19) in Brazil has increased by more than 19,000 over the past 24 hours - down from some 23,000 the day before, with over 600 deaths, the country's Health Ministry said in a statement.

The case tally rose by 19,373 to 3,359,570, the ministry said with the death toll increasing by 684 - up from 620 the day before - to 108,536.

More than 2.47 million have recovered from the disease in the country.

Meanwhile, the total number of coronavirus cases hs exceeded 21.5 million with the death toll surpassing 767,000.

The global case tally stands at 22,054,300, with 779,443 deaths, the university said on its website. A total of 14,024,897 patients have recovered from COVID-19.

The World Health Organization declared the outbreak of the new coronavirus a pandemic on March 11.

CAIRO (Sputnik) - Iraqi medics have registered a record rise in the number of daily registered cases of the novel coronavirus disease - 4,576, and the confirmed case tally has topped 184,000, the country's Health Ministry said.

"The Health Ministry registered 2,895 cases of recovery today, 4,576 new cases of infection and 82 deaths", the ministry said in a statement posted on Facebook.

The previous record for the daily increase in the number of cases was set on 16 August, when Health Ministry laboratories received 4,348 positive test results for the coronavirus.

Since the start of the epidemic, COVID-19 has been confirmed in 184,709 people. More than 131,000 patients have recovered, 6,036 have died.

According to the ministry, more than 500 people are in the country's intensive care units.

Amid the growing rate of the disease spread, the Higher Committee for Health and National Safety of Iraq decided on Saturday not to lift the limited curfew, which is in force from 10:00 pm to 05:00 am local time. In addition, transport links between the provinces have been suspended, except in cases of emergency.

TORONTO (Sputnik) - New data released by the Public Health Agency of Canada reveals that the country experienced in the past 24 hours the largest single-day novel coronavirus case count increase since May 25.

The epidemiological report for August 17 shows that Canadian health officials recorded 785 new cases in a 24-hour timeframe - the highest since officials reported 831 cases on May 25 - bringing the total to 122,872.

The novel coronavirus-related death toll in Canada stands at 9,032.

The increase is being fueled by the resurgence of the disease in Western Canada - predominantly in British Columbia and Alberta - where authorities attribute the spike to a rising share of infections among young adults.

According to Canada’s public health agency, there are 4,781 active cases throughout the country.

Laboratories across Canada have tested more than 4.8 million people as of August 17 and 109,059 - or 88.7 percent - of the infected have recovered.

ATHENS (Sputnik) - Nikos Hardalias, the Greek deputy minister for civil protection and crisis management, said on Tuesday that tourism was not among the reasons behind a growing number of COVID-19 cases in the country.

According to Hardalias, nearly 2.6 million people entered Greece between July 1 — the day the country reopened its borders — and August 16. More than 319,000 COVID-19 tests were taken upon arrivals, 615 of which came back positive.

"These 615 cases represent 17 percent of the 3,666 infections [registered] from July 1 to yesterday. That means that 83 percent of the cases were detected within the country and emerged due to non-compliance with prevention measures in crowded places," the official said.

Out of 2.593 million people who have arrived in Greece, about 2 million entered the country through airports, 140,000 through seaports, and about 385,000 crossed land borders, Hardalias noted, adding that those who have violated COVID-19 restrictions had been fined for a total of 2.530 million euros ($3.017 million) over the given period.

Greece has so far confirmed 7,222 cases of COVID-19 and 230 related fatalities. According to experts, most infected people contracted the virus at beach parties and public events, particularly, at weddings.

TOKYO (Sputnik) - South Korea is strengthening restrictions against the spread of COVID-19, which include a ban on all church services, except for contact-free ones, Prime Minister Chung Sye-kyun said on Tuesday.

"In particular, regarding churches in the capital region, only contact-free services will be permitted, while all other gatherings and activities are prohibited," the prime minister said in a video address.

Also banned are all events and gatherings in the capital with more than 50 participants if indoors, and more than 100 if outdoors. Twelve types of establishments, such as clubs, cafes and karaoke will cease their work.

South Korea has confirmed a total of 15,761 cases, with a death toll of 306.

The Moscow office of the Russian Red Cross Society has started forming groups of volunteers to help migrants and vulnerable social groups in preparation for a second wave of the COVID-19 pandemic, the organization told Sputnik on Tuesday.

"We are all preparing and regrouping because of the information on possible second wave in the fall … There is a possibility of new restrictions, so the volunteer movement will be in demand again in terms of buying medicines, delivering and buying food to those who are at risk, or those who are infected in a mild form, so that they do not become vectors. Therefore, we are now regrouping, forming volunteer groups in a sleep mode in the districts, we keep them in good shape and keep in touch with them," the Red Cross said.

Representatives of the Moscow branch noted that that the pandemic has intensified the work of the organization, as there was a higher demand for volunteers to distribute humanitarian aid received from large corporations and from abroad.

Russia has registered 4,748 COVID-19 cases in the past 24 hours (4,892 yesterday), bringing the cumulative total to 932,493, the country's coronavirus response center said on Tuesday.

"Over the past 24 hours, Russia has confirmed 4,748 COVID-19 cases in 83 regions, of which 1,377 (29 percent) have been detected actively, with people showing no clinical symptoms," the response center said in a statement.

This brings the total case count to 932,493, with the daily increase standing at 0.5 percent.

Moscow has registered 693 coronavirus cases in the past 24 hours, which is more than any other region in Russia, followed by St. Petersburg with 157 cases and the Sverdlovsk Region with 149 cases (compared to 690, 159 and 141 yesterday, respectively).

No new cases have been recorded in the Nenets Autonomous Region and the Chukotka Autonomous Region.

A total of 132 COVID-19 patients died in Russia in the past 24 hours (55 on the previous day), which brings the death toll to 15,872.

As many as 6,527 coronavirus patients have been discharged (3,133 yesterday), bringing the total number of recoveries to 742,628.

People receiving China's COVID-19 vaccine develop immunity to the virus within two weeks after the first injection, Liu Jingzhen, the head of China National Pharmaceutical Group (Sinopharm), said.

"One injection gives you a 97-percent guarantee of protection, antibodies are being developed slowly. In a normal situation, the necessary level of antibodies to fight against COVID-19 will be developed within half a month. If you take two injections, 100-percent protection is guaranteed," Liu said as quoted by Zhongguo Xinwen wang.

According to the official, the break between the first and the second injection is 28 days, but in special cases, the two injections can be given at once. The Sinopharm head assured that the vaccine will not be very expensive.

"We expect that one injection will cost several hundred yuan. If there are two injections, then the price will be within 1000 yuan ($144)," Liu said.

The company predicts that the Beijing National Institute of Biological Sciences will be able to produce 120 million doses of the vaccine per year and the Wuhan Institute will make up to 100 million doses per year.

At the same time, the Sinopharm head believes that the entire population of China, which exceeds 1.4 billion people, will not need mass vaccination. The vaccine is only needed in big cities with a high density of population.

Sinopharm is currently conducting the third stage of international clinical trials of the vaccine in the UAE. The drug is expected to be available in the market in late December 2020.

Over the past 24 hours Kazakhstan has registered 267 cases of the novel coronavirus disease (COVID-19), bringing the total number of cases to 103,300, an interdepartmental commission said.

The country's death toll from COVID-19 stands at 1,415. More than 82,700 people have recovered.

"A total of 267 new cases of coronavirus infection have been registered, of whom 144 are symptomatic carriers, 123 asymptomatic carriers," the commission said in its Telegram channel.
