WASHINGTON (Sputnik) - Some 60 percent of Americans fear the COVID-19 pandemic continues to worsen, a slight improvement from a record three-quarters of US adults who said the same a month ago, a Gallup Poll revealed on Friday.

“In Gallup polling the week of July 13-19, 73% of Americans said they believed the pandemic was getting worse, the highest level Gallup has yet recorded. At the time, the seven-day average of new COVID-19 cases was 66,000 per day. By Aug. 9, the seven-day average had declined to fewer than 54,000 new cases per day, which may partially account for Americans' improved outlook,” a press release explaining the poll said.

In addition to the 60 percent who now say the pandemic is getting worse represents a 13 percentage point decline in just under a month, 22 percent believe the situation is improving, up from 15 percent in mid July. Another 17 percent say the pandemic's profile remained unchanged.

With the November’s presidential election approaching, the poll revealed that Republican voters are now nearly twice as likely to say the situation is getting better rather than worse. In July, they were evenly divided, the release added.

WASHINGTON (Sputnik) - The novel coronavirus pandemic will probably claim 200,000 lives in the United States by 5 September, according to a new projection by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) on Friday.

"Four thousand, two hundred to 10,600 new COVID-19 deaths will be reported during the week ending September 5 and that 180,000 to 200,000 total COVID-19 deaths will be reported by that date," CDC said.

However, the CDC also said the projection also suggested that several US states and territories would be able to make progress in slowing down the spread of the novel coronavirus by then.

"State- and territory-level ensemble forecasts predict that the number of reported new deaths per week may increase over the next four weeks in Colorado and may decrease in Arizona, the Northern Mariana Islands, Vermont, and Wyoming," the CDC said.

As of Friday, the United States had reported 5,228,817 novel coronavirus cases and 166,317 virus-related deaths, the CDC said.

Local leaders are now setting up an enhanced incident team to try and bring infection rates under control, with support offered from the government. US President Donald Trump said on Friday that he hopes Russia’s vaccine against the novel coronavirus works, but added that he does not have much information about it.

"I don’t know much about it. We hope it works", Trump told reporters during a White House briefing.

Trump claimed that Russia has “cut off certain trials” before the vaccine was approved by the authorities and endorsed by President Vladimir Putin.

“We just feel it’s important to go through the process. We have numerous different vaccines that we think are going to work, but we want to go through a system of trials", he said.

Trump said there currently are three vaccine candidates on phase 3 trial in the United States.

“We are very advanced, we will be announcing something in a not too distant future", he said.
