The global death toll from the coronavirus infection has topped 719,000, and more than 19.2 million cases of infection have been detected, according to Johns Hopkins University, which tracks and compiles data from national and local authorities, the media and other sources.

The United States still has the highest case count in the world: more than 4.9 million have caught the disease, including over 160,300 who have since succumbed to the infection, according to the university data.

Earlier, the US lifted its health advisory for international travel during the novel coronavirus pandemic, the US State Department said in a statement.

MONTEVIDEO (Sputnik) – Argentina has confirmed 7,482 new cases of the coronavirus across the country within the past 24 hours, with the total number of people infected with COVID-19 having reached 235,677, the national Ministry of Health said.

A day earlier, Argentina reported record 7,513 new COVID-19 cases and 147 fatalities.

"Today, 7,482 new cases of COVID-19 have been confirmed, bringing the total number of [COVID-19] positive tests in the country to 235,677", the ministry said in a daily bulletin on late Friday.

The death toll has increased by 160 to 4,411 people within the same period of time.

MEXICO CITY (Sputnik) – The number of people, who have died of COVID-19 in Mexico, has risen by 794 to 51,311 within the past 24 hours, Deputy Health Minister Hugo Lopez-Gatell said.

He also said on late Friday that the number of confirmed coronavirus cases had increased by 6,717 to 469,407 within the same period of time.

A day earlier, the Latin American nation recorded 6,590 new cases of the coronavirus, with 819 fatalities.

MOSCOW (Sputnik) – The number of confirmed COVID-19 cases in Brazil has increased by 50,230 to 2,962,442 within the past 24 hours, the national Ministry of Health said on late Friday.

The death toll has risen by 1,079 to 99,572 people within the same period of time.

A day earlier, Brazil reported 53,139 new cases of the coronavirus disease and 1,237 new fatalities.

Brazil comes second on a global tally of coronavirus cases after the United States, which has recorded more than 4.9 million COVID-19 patients.

MOSCOW (Sputnik) – Moscow has registered 14 deaths of patients infected with COVID-19 over the past 24 hours, bringing the Russian capital's death toll to 4,560, the city's coronavirus response centre said in a statement on Friday.

"Another 14 patients, who were diagnosed with pneumonia and tested positive for the coronavirus infection, died in Moscow", the centre said.

In the previous day, 12 people infected with the coronavirus died in Moscow.

LONDON (Sputnik) - The number of people who have tested positive for the novel coronavirus in the UK has risen by 871 in the past 24 hours to 309,005, while the overall death tally climbed to 46,511 after 98 fresh deaths were confirmed, the Department of Health and Social Care said on Friday.

  The latest report by the health authorities comes as restrictions banning households from mixing indoors or in gardens are about to return from midnight to the English city of Preston, home of 140,000 people, after 49 cases of the novel coronavirus were detected there in the week ending on July 31, more than double of previous week's figures.

Similar measures have been reimposed in 18 areas of Greater Manchester, Leicester and West and East Yorkshire, as well as in the Scottish town of Aberdeen.

WASHINGTON (Sputnik) - All schools in the state of New York are authorized to reopen as the number of novel coronavirus cases is well below the infection limit, Governor Andrew Cuomo said in a statement on Friday.

"Every region is well below our COVID infection limit, therefore all school districts are authorized to open," Cuomo said via Twitter.

Cuomo said the school districts are required to submit their reopening plans to the state government for review.

The governor also said if the number of novel coronavirus infections increases, the state guidance will change accordingly.

The novel coronavirus outbreak in New York has been contained and businesses have been allowed to reopen under various restrictions this summer.

State authorities have reported a total of 418,928 novel coronavirus cases and 25,185 virus-related deaths, according to data from the governor's office.

MOSCOW (Sputnik) – The Ethiopian authorities have launched a nationwide testing campaign to detect the coronavirus infection in the country’s citizens that would run for a month, local media reported on Friday.

Around 200,000 will undergo tests for COVID-19 in the next two weeks, the local Fana Broadcasting Corporate radio station reported. The country’s authorities also plan to conduct a home-based health assessment of some 17 million Ethiopian residents.

Last week, Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed has stated that this campaign should help figure out what steps are needed to be taken in the future to combat the COVID-19 pandemic.

To date, the country’s Health Ministry have confirmed 20,900 cases of COVID-19, with 365 deaths and over 9,000 recoveries.

The vaccination of Russians, including risk groups, can only begin after the issuance of a registration certificate, the country's Health Ministry said on Friday, commenting on media reports that officials and doctors in Moscow were allegedly offered to be vaccinated against the coronavirus.

"The vaccination of the population, including risk groups, is possible only after the issuance of a registration certificate in the manner prescribed by law. The same rule applies to voluntary vaccination in the third phase of clinical trials," the ministry said.

Earlier this week, Bloomberg reported that medical staff and local government officials in Moscow were offered the opportunity to get a COVID-19 vaccine, as Russia is to register the vaccine against the virus. The media outlet cited such an invitation sent to a city government official, according to which the vaccine is safe and has passed clinical trials.

Russia has registered 5,241 COVID-19 cases in the past 24 hours (5,267 yesterday), bringing the cumulative total to 877,135, the country's coronavirus response center said on Friday.

"Over the past 24 hours, Russia has confirmed 5,241 COVID-19 cases in 84 regions, of which 1,421 (27.1 percent) have been detected actively, with people showing no clinical symptoms," the response center said in a statement.

This brings the total case count to 877,135, with the daily increase standing at 0.6 percent.

Moscow has registered 686 coronavirus cases in the past 24 hours, which is more than any other region in Russia, followed by the Sverdlovsk Region with 180 cases and the Moscow Region with 158 new cases (compared to 684, 183 and 159 yesterday, respectively).

No new cases have been recorded in the Nenets Autonomous Region.

A total of 119 COVID-19 patients died in Russia in the past 24 hours (116 on the previous day), which brings the death toll to 14,725.

As many as 7,235 coronavirus patients have been discharged (7,331yesterday), bringing the total number of recoveries to 683,592.

More than 30 million tests for COVID-19 have been performed in Russia, with over 246,000 people being monitored, the country's consumer rights and human welfare watchdog, Rospotrebnadzor, said on Friday.

"We have conducted over 30 million coronavirus tests in Russia. 246,322 people are remaining under medical supervision," the watchdog said in a statement, adding that 321,000 tests have been done in the last 24 hours.

Russia has confirmed a total of 871,894 cases of the coronavirus, and the death toll from the disease has reached 14,606.

India has confirmed record 62,538 new cases of the coronavirus over the past 24 hours, with the total number of those infected having reached 2,027,074, the country's Ministry of Health and Family Welfare said on Friday.

The death toll from the disease has reached 41,585, with 886 new fatalities being recorded over the past day. More than 1.37 million people have recovered in India since the start of the outbreak.

A day earlier, India registered 56,282 new coronavirus cases and 904 fatalities.

India comes third in terms of the number of confirmed COVID-19 cases, following the United States and Brazil.
