COVID-19 Live Updates: Number of COVID-19 Cases Worldwide Tops 8 Million, JHU Tally Shows

The global number of confirmed cases of the coronavirus infection has surpassed 7.6 million, with over 427,000 fatalities being reported since the start of the outbreak, according to the latest data provided by the World Health Organisation (WHO).

The cumulative global tally of confirmed coronavirus cases has increased by 137,526 over the past day, down from 142,672 the day before, to 7,690,708, according to the WHO.

Over the past 24 hours, 4,281 people have died from COVID-19 worldwide, down from 5,055 the day before, taking the death toll to 427,630.

The United States still has the highest case count in the world, with 2,081,296 infected, including 115,521 fatalities and 556,606 who have recovered. Meanwhile, the daily fatality rate in the state of New York — the worst-hit state — continues to decrease, with 23 new COVID-19 patients being recorded over the past 24 hours, according to Governor Andrew Cuomo.

The number of confirmed cases of the coronavirus infection in Africa has reached 230,454 and 6,218 people have died from the disease there, the World Health Organisation (WHO) said on Sunday. More than 106,000 people have recovered there since the outbreak began.

India has witnessed the sharpest jump in coronavirus deaths as the country recorded 380 fatalities in the last 24 hours. Indian health ministry said on Tuesday that causalities from the pandemic rose to 9,900 with the highest number of deaths - 178 - reported from the western state of Maharashtra.

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi will take review of the situation of the coronavirus pandemic in the country with the chief ministers of the states on Tuesday and Wednesday.

TOKYO (Sputnik) - Haruyuki Takahashi, the director of the Tokyo Games organizing committee, said on Tuesday that the issue of further delaying the 2020 Olympics should be discussed with the International Olympic Committee (IOC) if holding games in 2021 would become problematic.

"We must once again work out the postponement with the International Olympic Committee," Takahashi told the Nikkan Sports News portal.

The director specified that the Tokyo Games organizing committee should discuss the matter with IOC in the spring of 2021 if the epidemiological situation would be still challenging by then.

At the same time, Takahashi said that the cancellation of the games should be avoided as it would hurt Japan’s economy.

In late March, the IOC, together with the organizing committee of the Tokyo Games, announced that the Summer Olympics would be postponed to 2021 due to the coronavirus pandemic. Games are now scheduled to be held from 23 July to 8 August 2021.

BEIJING (Sputnik) - China registered 40 new coronavirus cases over the past 24 hours, including 27 cases in Beijing amid the new cluster at the wholesale food market, Xinfadi, the country’s National Health Commission said on Tuesday.

Out of the 40 new cases reported on Monday, 32 are local, while eight are imported. In addition to Beijing, local cases were detected in the northern Hebei province (4) and in the southwestern Sichuan province (1). Moreover, China registered six asymptomatic COVID-19 carriers and seven recoveries over the given period.

The country’s total number of confirmed coronavirus cases now stands at 83,221, and the death toll is 4,634. The total number of recovered individuals in China reached 78,377.

A new cluster of COVID-19 cases was detected in China last week. On Saturday, Beijing authorities announced they had shut down Xinfadi after over 40 people linked to the market tested positive for the coronavirus. On Sunday, Beijing authorities said that the Chinese capital was in "wartime emergency mode."

MEXICO CITY (Sputnik) - Mexico confirmed 3,427 new coronavirus cases over the past 24 hours, taking the total to 150,264 since the start of the outbreak, Jose Luis Alomia, the director of epidemiology at the Health Ministry, said on Tuesday.

"The number of detected infections has reached 150,264, these are confirmed cases of COVID-19," the health official said.

Alomia also added that 439 COVID-19 carriers died over the given period, and the overall coronavirus-related death toll reached 17,580.

On Monday, the authorities decreased the COVID-19 threat level for 16 of 32 states from red (the highest level) to orange (high level). The orange level means that the lockdown is partially lifted as authorities now allow most non-essential businesses to reopen.

MEXICO CITY (Sputnik) - Brazil registered 20,647 over the past 24 hours, up from 17,110 a day ago, and the overall tally climbed to 888,271, the Health Ministry said on Tuesday.

At the same time, the coronavirus-related death toll increased by 627 over the given period and reached 43,959. On Monday, Brazil reported 612 deaths.

According to the health authorities, the COVID-19 mortality rate is 4.9 percent.

Brazil has registered more coronavirus cases and related deaths than any other country except the United States, which registered over 2.1 million cases and more than 116,000 deaths.

The global case tally stands at 8,003,021, and the death toll is at 435,619.

A total of 3,832,784 people have recovered from COVID-19, according to the university.

DOHA (Sputnik) - The government of the United Arab Emirates will allow citizens and residents to leave the country and enter certain destinations, the Emirates News Agency reported on Monday, citing a joint announcement by the Foreign Ministry and other government agencies.

In March, the Middle Eastern country banned citizens from traveling abroad amid the COVID-19 pandemic.

According to the statement, the authorities will provide details on approved destinations and other restrictions at a later date.

Meanwhile, the Abu Dhabi emirate has extended the lockdown for a week starting from Tuesday — the residents are not allowed to visit other regions of the UAE.

The UAE has so far confirmed over 42,600 COVID-19 cases and 291 coronavirus-related fatalities

MOSCOW (Sputnik) - The global number of confirmed cases of the coronavirus infection has surpassed 7.8 million, with over 431,000 fatalities being reported since the start of the outbreak, according to the latest data provided by the World Health Organization (WHO) on Monday.

The cumulative global toll of confirmed cases has increased by 132,581 over the past day to 7,823,289, according to the WHO.

Over the past 24 hours, 3,911 people died from COVID-19 worldwide, taking the death toll to 431,541.

The Americas, with over 3.7 million confirmed cases, remains the epicenter of the epidemic.

ATHENS (Sputnik) - Greece has recorded 13 new cases of the coronavirus infection over the past 24 hours, which brings the country's tally to 3,134 as the rate declines, the National Public Health Organization said on Monday.

Over the past day, the death toll from the disease has grown by one to 184, according to the health authority.

As of now, 13 COVID-19 patients are in intensive care units, while 117 others were discharged from the intensive care unit due to the improvement of their health condition.

Greece began easing its COVID-19 restrictions earlier in May amid the improving epidemiological situation in the country, allowing travel between islands, the holding of religious services and retail businesses to reopen.

Monday marked a new phase of abatement of coronavirus-related restrictions in Greece. Among activities and services that resumed operations are gyms, theme parks, seasonal hotels, as well as care services for people with disabilities. Airports in the capital of Athens and the second largest city of Thessaloniki started receiving flights from countries with favorable epidemiological profile.

SANTIAGO (Sputnik) - Chilean President Sebastian Pinera decided to extend the state of emergency effective in the country due to the COVID-19 pandemic for additional three months, the country's government said in a statement.

"On Monday, June 15, President Sebastian Pinera decided to extend the state of disaster, which has been introduced in the country since March, for another three months to contain the spread of a new coronavirus," the statement read.

This regime, announced on 18 March, envisages the collection and storage of food supplies, establishment of curfews, quarantine, restrictions on gatherings and freedom of movement, as well as the use of armed forces on the streets to enforce order.

Chile has so far registered 179,436 COVID-19 cases and 3,362 related fatalities.

PARIS (Sputnik) - The number of COVID-19-related fatalities in France has increased by 29 and now stands at 29,436, the country's Health Ministry announced on Monday.

The previous reports indicated that there were 29,407 COVID-19 deaths in France.

"Since the beginning of the epidemic in France, 29,436 people have died, and 19,052 of them have died in country's hospitals," the ministry said in a statement.

A total of 114 people were hospitalized over the past 24 hours with the overall number of people being treated in hospitals amounts to 10,752. Thirteen people of the total 846 were placed in intensive care units over the same period.

More than 73,000 people fully recovered and were discharged from hospitals across France, the ministry stated.

French Health Minister Olivier Veran said earlier in the day that France's health situation had improved, as the spread of the coronavirus appeared to be slowing down, however, the infection was still circulating. President Emmanuel Macron announced that the exit from the lockdown would be accelerated across the country, with restaurants and cafes fully reopening in Paris on Monday, and border restrictions with EU member states being lifted.

MOSCOW (Sputnik) - More than 100 cases of COVID-19 have been confirmed in Beijing after an extended period with no cases, the origins of the new outbreak are being investigated, Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, the head of the World Health Organization, said Monday.

"Even in countries that have demonstrated the ability to suppress transmission, countries must stay alert to the possibility of resurgence. Last week, China reported a new cluster of cases in Beijing, after more than 50 days without a case in that city. More than 100 cases have now been confirmed. The origin and extent of the outbreak are being investigated," Tedros told a press conference.

Executive Director of WHO Health Emergencies Programme Michael Ryan pointed out that the emergence of new infection clusters was still of concern, especially if the origin of an outbreak was not clear.

"What we would like to see is an immediate response to that and comprehensive set of measures ... Beijing is a large city and a very dynamic connected city. There is a always a concern. I think you can see that level of concern in the response of the Chinese authorities," Ryan said.

More than 7.9 million cases have been recorded across the world so far. Several countries in Europe and Asia began began slowly relaxing coronavirus-linked restrictions after seeing the case numbers in their particular areas go down.

MOSCOW (Sputnik) - Afghanistan tested 1,557 suspected samples for coronavirus in the past day, with 761 returning positive results, the Health Ministry said Monday.

The ministry said on Facebook that seven COVID-19 patients had died in the past 24 hours, while 365 had recovered.

The Central Asian nation now has 25,527 confirmed cases, according to official data cited by the Tolo News website, including 5,090 recoveries and 478 deaths.

MOSCOW (Sputnik) - Saudi Arabia registered 4,507 new coronavirus cases in the past 24 hours setting a new record for daily infections announced in the kingdom, the health ministry said in its daily update.

This brings the total confirmed cases in the country to 132,048, of whom 87,890 have recovered.

The coronavirus death toll has grown by 39 to reach 1,011 fatalities, the ministry said.

The daily update contained information about one elderly woman infecting nine people from three families at an indoor gathering which flouted social distancing. Three of those people have been admitted to hospitals as a result.

Although Saudi Arabia far outstrips any of its Gulf neighbors, Oman announced a daily increase of 1,043 new COVID-19 cases taking the total to 24,524.

Four additional fatalities in the sultanate have increased the death toll to 108 while nearly 10,000 have recovered, the health ministry’s daily update showed.

Meanwhile, two additional deaths and 511 new infections were detected in Kuwait, resulting in an overall tally of 298 deaths and 36,431 infections, the health ministry there reported.

Smallest Gulf state Bahrain counted 317 new infections and four fatalities in the past 24 hours, resulting in a tally of 18,544 cases in total and 46 deaths.

RIGA (Sputnik) - Health officials in Latvia have recorded no new COVID-19 cases over the past weekend, the country's Center for Disease Prevention and Control said on Monday.

"Latvia did not register a single new case of coronavirus infection for two consecutive days," the center said.

The country has conducted more than 128,145 COVID-19 tests since the outbreak, 1,097 of which came back positive, according to the health authorities. Over 840 patients have recovered and 28 have died.

Seven patients remain in hospitals, six of them in serious condition and one in critical condition.

Meanwhile, the number of confirmed COVID-19 cases in neighboring Lithuania increased by five to 1,773 in the past 24 hours, the government said.

The death toll from coronavirus rose to 76 and a total of 1,429 patients are now free from the virus.

The lockdown in Lithuania expired on May 31, however, the quarantine regime is still in place until Tuesday.

In the meantime, Estonia has recorded one COVID-19 case in the past 24 hours, taking the country's total to 1,974, according to the country's Health Board.

"COVID-19 was diagnosed in 1,974 Estonians in various regions of the country. Since January 31, more than 96,000 tests for coronavirus have been conducted in Estonia. Fourteen patients remain in hospitals. Sixty-nine people died during the pandemic," the Health Board said in a statement.

On May 18, Estonia lifte the state of emergency, declared on March 12. Restrictions and social distancing rules are being removed gradually.

According to Swedish Health Minister Lena Hallengren, the country will extend its ban on visits to elderly care homes through 31 August.

The ban was imposed on 30 March amid the coronavirus outbreak.

As of 15 June, the total number of COVID-19 cases in Sweden is 52,383, with 4,891 deaths, most of them among elderly people, according to Johns Hopkins University.

Belgium has recorded 71 new COVID-19 cases over the past 24 hours, taking the total tally to 60,100, and the death toll has reached 9,661 following the deaths of six people over the day, the Health Ministry said on Monday, as the lifting of coronavirus-related restrictions is underway.

According to the health authorities, 17 people were hospitalized in the past day, and the number of patients in intensive care units now stands at 84. A total of 21 people recovered and were discharged from hospitals.

Starting on 4 May, Belgium has begun a phase-by-phase relaxing of its coronavirus-related restrictions. Businesses that do not require direct contact with customers were allowed to resume operations. All stores and street stalls have been allowed to reopen, and Belgians are allowed to receive up to four people belonging to the same family and preferably in gardens and other outdoor venues.

Starting on 8 June, food services, bars and night clubs were allowed to reopen. On Monday, Belgium is set to open borders with EU countries.

African countries have recorded over 240,000 confirmed coronavirus cases, with more than 109,900 recoveries and 6,412 deaths, the World Health Organization said Monday.

Data published by the WHO's Regional Office for Africa shows that South Africa tops the list of affected countries on the continent with 70,038 total cases and 1,480 deaths, followed by Nigeria and Algeria.

In the Eastern Mediterranean Region, Egypt comes first with 42,980 cases and 1,484 deaths. Libya has 418 confirmed cases and eight virus-related deaths.

WHO warned last week that the pandemic in Africa was accelerating since the virus was first detected on the continent in mid-February. It took 98 days to reach 100,000 cases and only 19 days to move to 200,000 cases.

France's health situation has improved, as the spread of the coronavirus appears to be slowing down, however, the infection is still circulating so it is important to remain vigilant, French Health Minister Olivier Veran said on Monday.

"The bulk of the coronavirus epidemic is behind and we are making every effort to monitor outbreaks in France. The virus is not dead but we are able to control its spread," Veran said live on the LCI channel.

When asked about the fresh cluster of coronavirus infections in a wholesale food market in China's capital of Beijing, Veran said he believed that "the Chinese are very careful" and make necessary decisions in advance in order to prevent the further spread of the virus within the country.

He added that in France, only one percent of the COVID-19 tests that are conducted daily come back positive and said that the authorities had fully disclosed the number of related deaths, which has surpassed expectations by 29,000.

As of Monday, France has registered 194,153 COVID-19 infections, 29,410 related fatalities and 72,982 recoveries.

After India’s Supreme Court in India reproached Delhi and three more state governments for their shoddy management of the COVID-19 crisis as also asked the federal government to submit a status report to the court, federal Home Minister Amit Shah took charge of the management of the crisis in the National Capital.

Shah convened a meeting of political leaders from the national capital in New Delhi on Monday and asked them to bury their political differences and join hands with the Delhi government in containing the viral infection.

Delhi, with 41,182 cases (15,823 cured and 1,327 deaths), was second to Maharashtra with 107,958 cases (50,978 cured cases and 3,950 deaths) followed by Tamil Nadu (44,661 cases, 24,547 recoveries, 435 deaths), according to data released by federal health ministry.

French doctors are helping Armenia to treat coronavirus patients in the country's three main clinics, Armenian Health Minister Arsen Torosyan said Monday.

"Our doctor colleagues who came from France yesterday are already working in intensive care units in three major medical centers," Torosyan said on Facebook.

He said earlier that a dozen French doctors and some 50 Russian health care professionals would come to Armenia to help it cope with the coronavirus outbreak.

Armenia has so far confirmed 17,064 COVID-19 cases, including 6,276 recoveries and 285 deaths. The government declared a state of emergency on March 16 that is to expire on 13 July.

Ukraine has updated its coronavirus tally by 656 infections to 31,810 in the past 24 hours as the country continues to see an incremental rise in new cases, the Health Ministry’s data showed on Monday.

On Saturday, the country registered 753 new cases, which is the highest daily increment since the start of the outbreak in the country. On Sunday, Ukraine reported 648 infections.

"In the past 24 hours, 656 people have tested positive … [Another] 12 deaths have been recorded. At the same time, 171 patients have recovered," Health Minister Maksym Stepanov said at a briefing.

Since the onset of the epidemic, 31,810 people have been infected, including 2,350 children and 5,537 medical workers. A total of 14,253 patients have recovered and 901 have died.

In another post-Soviet republic, Armenia, the daily coronavirus increase dropped from a record 723 cases on Saturday to 397 on Monday, taking the total to 17,064, the national COVID-19 response center said on Monday.

Another 16 people have died, bringing the toll to 285. A total of 6,276 coronavirus patients have recovered.

The country with a population of nearly 3 million has conducted over 83,6000 coronavirus tests.

Georgia, in turn, reported 15 new cases on Monday, up from 13 infections recorded the day before.

The cumulative tally has risen to 879. Of those infected, 704 patients have recovered and 14 others have died.

The number of severe COVID-19 cases is decreasing in Moscow, with 22 percent less hospitalizations registered last week than in the first week of June, Mayor Sergei Sobyanin said on Monday that the decision to lift major restrictions has proven true.

Last week, the mayor canceled the self-isolation regime and the ID pass system in the city, allowing Moscow residents to leave homes freely.

"We see a stable reduction in severe cases, in the numbers of patients who need to be hospitalized. Compared to the week of June 1-7, 2020, the average number of hospitalizations decreased by 22 percent last week, from 753 to 587 daily," Sobyanin wrote in his personal blog.

The number of people undergoing treatment in coronavirus hospitals across Moscow reduced by 13 percent to 8,500 last week, the mayor added.

"Today, as a week has passed, we see that incidence keeps decreasing ... And this is just fine! This means the risk has paid off, and we can proceed to the next stage of lifting restrictions, planned for 16 June 2020," Sobyanin said.

The mayor called on Moscow residents to respect social distancing and use personal protective gear.

Russia has registered 8,246 COVID-19 cases in the past 24 hours (8,835 yesterday), bringing the overall tally to 537,210, the national coronavirus response centre said on Monday.

"Over the past 24 hours, Russia has confirmed 8,246 COVID-19 cases in 83 regions, of which 2,832 (34.3 percent) have been detected actively, with people showing no clinical symptoms," the response center said in a statement.

Russia has so far recorded 537,210 COVID-19 cases in 85 regions (+1.6 percent), the center added.

Of all the new cases, 1,359 have been registered in Moscow, 689 in the Moscow region and 252 in St. Petersburg (compared to yesterday's 1,477, 717 and 256, respectively).

The country's COVID-19 death toll has grown by 143 (119 yesterday) to 7,091.

Health authorities in Germany have recorded 192 new COVID-19 cases and four fatalities over the past 24 hours, marking a decrease in both parameters from the day before, the Robert Koch Institute said on Monday.

The latest situation update from Germany on Sunday stated a daily increase of 247 new cases and six fatalities.

The overall number of confirmed coronavirus cases in Germany has now reached 186,461, and the death toll has reached 8,791, according to the situation update.

According to Robert Koch, which compiles the statistics for the German government, the majority of cases have been registered in the state of Bavaria (47,642), followed by North Rhine-Westphalia (39,307) and Baden-Wurttemberg (35,090). The German capital city of Berlin has so far confirmed 7,322 COVID-19 cases.

The risk of further spread of coronavirus in Beijing is very high amid the new COVID-19 cluster at the largest wholesale market in China's capital, Xu Hejian, spokesman for the municipal government and director of its information office, said on Monday.

"There is a very high risk of spreading the epidemic due to the [COVID-19] cluster at the Xinfadi market in Beijing," Xu told reporters.

The city spokesman noted that the authorities would take the most stringent measures, conduct a thorough epidemiological investigation in the market and in the surrounding areas, identify the source of infection, and test people in the hotbed and neighboring areas.

Beijing authorities announced on Saturday that they had shut down the city’s wholesale food market Xinfadi after over 40 people linked to the market tested positive for the coronavirus. The next day, the Chinese capital was put in a "wartime emergency mode." The novel coronavirus was detected on a chopping board for imported salmon. According to the city authorities, all people who work at Xinfadi or visited the place since 30 May will take nucleic acid tests to detect if they are infected with COVID-19.

Over 76,000 people were tested for coronavirus on Sunday, 59 of which tested positive, according to the Beijing authorities. However, according to Monday morning's statistics, there were only 42 COVID-19 cases, with 36 of them symptomatic and six asymptomatic. A total of 79 people are currently being treated in the city’s hospitals.

Kyrgyzstan has recorded 87 COVID-19 cases over the past 24 hours, which is a record daily spike since the beginning of the outbreak, the country's coronavirus response center told Sputnik on Monday.

On Sunday, the response center reported 78 new cases.

"On 15 June, 2020, 87 new COVID-19 cases have been registered in the republic, Bishkek accounts for 48 of them," a representative of the center said.

Twenty-two new patients are doctors, the representative said, adding that 22 persons have been discharged from hospitals over the past 24 hours.

Kyrgyzstan has confirmed 2,372 COVID-19 cases so far, with 460 infected doctors. The death toll stands at 27, and the number of recoveries totals 1,813.

The number of coronavirus cases in South Korea has increased to 12,121, with 37 of them confirmed over the past 24 hours, the health ministry's Korea Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (KCDC) said on Monday.

For the past two weeks, the daily increase in the number of COVID-19 cases in South Korea has been within the 30-60 range. The latest situation report on Sunday stated 34 new cases among a total of 12,085, including 277 fatalities and 10,718 recoveries.

As of Monday midnight (15:00, Sunday GMT), the death toll from COVID-19 in South Korea has remained unchanged and the number of recoveries has increased to 10,730, or 88.5 percent of the cumulative toll of cases, according to the center's report.

Of 37 newly detected cases, the KCDC said 13 had been imported, while 24 were of local transmission. Geographically, seven of them were registered in Seoul, another 10 in the Gyeonggi-do province and eight in the Incheon city, both neighboring the capital, while the rest were scattered across the country.

South Korea has conducted more than 1.1 million coronavirus tests as of Sunday, as stated in the report.

The number of coronavirus cases in India has grown by 11,500 on a sixth consecutive day of more than 11,000 new cases, the Health Ministry said on Monday.

The country's total coronavirus tally now stands at 320,922, overtaking those in the United Kingdom, Italy and Spain.

The number of recoveries increased by 7,419 and reached 169,797 in the preceding day. The coronavirus-related death toll rose by 335 to 9,530.

India has been registering on average 7,000-10,000 new cases per day in late May and early June, which then increased to an average 11,000 in the past week, compared with 2,000-5,000 in the first half of May.

The country's central state of Maharashtra, with 107,858 cases, remains the most affected region. It is followed by the southern state of Tamil Nadu, with 44,661 cases, and the National Capital Territory of Delhi, with 41,182 cases.
