COVID-19 Live Updates: Total Number of COVID-19 Cases Worldwide Tops 7 Million - JHU

The death toll from the global coronavirus pandemic has reached 399,718; over 6.89 million cases of the infection have been detected, and almost 3.08 million of those patients have recovered, according to Baltimore, Maryland's Johns Hopkins University, which tracks and compiles data from national and local authorities, the media and other sources.

The Americas continue to lead in the number of overall coronavirus cases, with over 3.1 million cases. The Americas are followed by Europe, which has reported over 2.2 million COVID-19 cases.

The United States has the highest case count in the world, with 1,920,061, including 109,802 fatalities and 500,849 recoveries.

MOSCOW (Sputnik) - Brazil’s coronavirus death toll has surpassed 37,000 and the country’s total number of COVID-19 cases stands at over 685,400, according to official data.

Brazil's Health Ministry has launched a new website for publishing coronavirus statistics, but no data for a 24-hour-period was provided on Sunday. The overall count shows that Brazil now has a total of 685,427 confirmed coronavirus cases and the death toll stands at 37,312.

Meanwhile, the old website for providing Brazil’s coronavirus statistics shows that 18,912 new cases and 525 new COVID-19 fatalities were registered in the past 24 hours.

Brazil has the second-largest number of confirmed coronavirus cases (after the United States) and the third-largest number of COVID-19 fatalities (after the US and the United Kingdom).

On Saturday, Brazil reported 904 new COVID-19 deaths and over 27,000 new cases.

On Sunday, protests were held in Rio de Janeiro, as well as other Brazilian cities, against the government of President Jair Bolsonaro who has been widely criticized for ignoring recommendations on how to handle the health crisis sparked by the coronavirus pandemic.

MOSCOW (Sputnik) - There are no more active coronavirus cases in New Zealand, the country’s Ministry of Health announced on Monday.

"Having no active cases for the first time since February 28 is certainly a significant mark in our journey but as we’ve previously said, ongoing vigilance against COVID-19 will continue to be essential," Director-General of Health Dr. Ashley Bloomfield said in a statement on Monday.

According to New Zealand’s ministry of health, the last remaining coronavirus case has been symptom free for 48 hours and is now regarded as recovered.

"It is now 17 days since the last new case was reported in New Zealand," the ministry said in its Monday statement.

New Zealand has a total of 1,154 confirmed coronavirus cases and the country’s combined total of confirmed and probable cases remains at 1,504. The number of recovered individuals is 1,482 and the country’s COVID-19 death toll stands at 22.

BEIJING (Sputnik) - China has registered four new coronavirus cases across the country over the past 24 hours, with no people having died of the disease, the National Health Commission said.

The commission said that all new cases were imported with three of them registered in Sichuan province and one in Shanghai. The authorities also reported about two new asymptomatic cases.

Overall, China now has a total of 83,040 confirmed coronavirus cases, 1,780 of them imported. In total, 78,341 people have recovered from COVID-19 in the country, while the death toll stands at 4,634.

The number of confirmed cases in Hong Kong stands at 1,106 people, with four patients having died and 1,049 more having been discharged from hospitals. Forty-five people have been infected with the disease in Macao, and all of them have already been released from medical facilities. The number of infected people in Taiwan amounts to 443, with seven of them having died and 430 others recovered.

MEXICO CITY (Sputnik) - The number of people who died from the coronavirus disease in Mexico has grown by 188 to 13,699 in the past 24 hours, the Health Ministry said on Sunday, noting that the total COVID-19 tally in the country has increased by 3,484 to 117,103 over the same period.

On Saturday, Mexico reported the daily increment in COVID-19 cases of 3,593 and 341 fatalities.

"As many as 13,699 deaths from COVID-19 complications have been confirmed," Jose Luis Alomia, the director of epidemiology at Mexico’s Ministry of Health, said during a press conference, broadcast on Twitter.

According to the health authorities, the country currently has 19,629 active COVID-19 cases. A total of 1,175 suspected coronavirus deaths are under verification.

The World Health Organization declared the COVID-19 outbreak a pandemic on 11 March. Johns Hopkins University data shows that the cumulative number of COVID-19 cases confirmed globally is over 6.9 million with the death toll exceeds 400,000.

MOSCOW (Sputnik) - The number of Canadians who have contracted coronavirus disease increased to 95,057, while the virus-related death toll grew to 7,773, Public Health Agency data revealed on Sunday.

According to the Health Agency's data, the province of Quebec remains the epicenter of the outbreak in Canada, accounting for more than half of all confirmed cases — 52,624. The province of Ontario follows with 30,202 confirmed cases.

Laboratories across Canada have tested over 1,868,000 people for COVID-19 to date. Some 5 percent of them tested positive for the disease, the health authorities noted.

GAZA (Sputnik) - Eight new coronavirus cases have been registered in the Gaza Strip, there are children among the infected, according to Palestinian Health Minister Mai al-Kaila.

"Eight new cases of the coronavirus infection were registered in the vicinity of the city of Hebron on the West Bank of the Jordan River, there are three children among the infected. The total number of infections is 651," the health minister said.

There are now over 70 confirmed coronavirus cases in the Gaza Strip. The first, and only, COVID-19 death in the Gaza Strip so far was reported on 23 May. Palestine has reported a total of five COVID-19 fatalities.

Over 550 people have recovered from COVID-19 in Palestine, according to Health Ministry data.

At the start of this month, the Palestinian authorities decided to reopen mosques to worshipers who are nonetheless required to follow some precautionary measures, such as wearing face masks and bringing extra prayer rugs. Public events and celebrations in mosques are still banned and children are not allowed.

PARIS (Sputnik) - Another 13 coronavirus patients died in French hospitals in the past day, taking the death toll to 29,155, according to figures published Sunday by the national health agency.

With 343 new confirmed cases, the country's total now stands at 153,977.

Of them 102,601 COVID-19 patients have been hospitalized since the start of the outbreak, 37 in the past 24 hours. There are 12,461 people receiving treatment in hospitals, including 1,053 in intensive care units.

MOSCOW (Sputnik) - The three largest British airlines have sent a letter to the UK government saying they would challenge the 14-day quarantine for international arrivals, effective Monday.

The pre-legal action letter by the British Airways's owner IAG was co-signed by its rivals, low-cost easyJet and Ryanair, who called the quarantine measure "unlawful."

The companies said that the restriction would keep the number of arrivals low. A failure to comply with it will be punishable with a 1,000 pound ($1,266) fine.

IAG chief Willie Walsh told Sky News on Friday that the measure was "irrational" and "disproportionate" and would torpedo the airlines' chances of flying in July.

The death count stands at 397,388 people, with over 4,586 deaths recorded in the past 24 hours, according to the WHO dashboard.

The Americas are leading with 3,234,875 cases.

WHO declared COVID-19 a pandemic on March 11.

MOSCOW, June 7 (Sputnik) - The number of coronavirus-related deaths in the United States has crossed the 110,000 mark, according to data compiled by Johns Hopkins University.

The latest data puts the death toll at 110,028. The number of confirmed coronavirus cases has reached 1,927,428, of whom more than 500,000 have recovered.

ANKARA, June 7 (Sputnik) - Turkey registered 914 new coronavirus cases over the past 24 hours, and the overall tally reached 170,132, Turkish Health Minister Fahrettin Koca said on Sunday.

"Today, 914 new cases were confirmed, bringing the total number of infected to 170,132," Koca tweeted.

At the same time, the coronavirus-related death toll increased by 23 to 4,692 over the given period. Meanwhile, 2,647 people have fully recovered from COVID-19 over the past 24 hours, taking the total number of recoveries to 137,969.

Since the start of the outbreak, Turkish health authorities have conducted over 2.3 million COVID-19 tests.

Iran confirmed 2,364 new coronavirus cases over the past 24 hours, taking the overall tally to 171,789, Health Ministry spokesman Kianush Jahanpur said on Sunday.

"Over the past 24 hours, 2,364 new cases of the coronavirus infection were detected across the country, and 72 people [COVID-19 carriers] have died," Jahanpur told the IRINN channel.

At the same time, the coronavirus-related death toll increased to 8,291 over the given period, while the number of recoveries reached 134,349.

Iran registered a record 3,574 cases on Thursday. Since then, the country is reporting less than 3,000 cases a day.

Malaysian Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin announced that the majority of coronavirus-related restrictions in the country that were introduced in late March will be lifted starting June 10, media reported on Sunday.

According to the local New Straits Times newspaper, the authorities will restore free movement of citizens between most states and domestic tourism. In addition, with some restrictions, almost all social, religious, economic and educational activities will resume. In particular, beauty salons and open-air markets will resume work, citizens will be able to visit museums and entertainment sites. The phased opening of schools will also start.

At the same time, contact sports and mass sports events will remain banned for the time being. Nightclubs, theme parks and karaoke bars will also remain closed, the newspaper reported.

The new regime will be in force until August 31, New Straits Times added.

French Secretary of State for Ecological Transition Brune Poirson announced on Sunday that fines for throwing away litter on streets would increase to 135 euros ($153) as the volume of waste linked to the coronavirus, including protective masks and gloves, in public places has been increasing since the onset of the pandemic.

"The plastic waste linked to the COVID-19 crisis reminds us that if we want clean oceans, it starts with clean sidewalks. To fight incivility and pollution, the fine for throwing waste [namely protective masks and gloves] at streets will increase to 135 euros," Poirson wrote on Twitter.

Currently, the fine for throwing away litter on streets amounts to 68 euros and may reach 180 euros if not paid on time.

According to the Franceinfo broadcaster, under a new order, which will be revealed in mid-June, the fine will be increased to 135 euros and could amount to up to 375 euros in some cases. It could even reach 750 euros if police draw up a report and forward it to the court.

The global death toll from COVID-19 has surpassed 400,000 on Sunday, data compiled by Johns Hopkins University showed.

As of 11:25 GMT, the number of coronavirus-related fatalities on a global scale has reached 400,135.

The United States has reported the highest death toll — 109,802. The US is followed by the United Kingdom, with over 40,000 deaths, and Brazil, where the COVID-19 death toll is approaching 36,000.

At the same time, the cumulative number of cases confirmed globally has surpassed 6.9 million and the overall tally of recoveries has exceeded three million.

India’s COVID-19 case count rose by 9,971 to 246,628 over the past 24 hours, the Health Ministry said on Sunday as the authorities are planning to lift some lockdown restrictions despite an increase in infection rate.

On Monday, India will allow places of worship, hotels, restaurants and shopping malls to reopen in a bid to help the economy.

The number of recoveries increased over the past day by 5,220 and reached 119,293. The coronavirus-related death toll rose by 287 to 6,929.

India has been registering on average 7,000-10,000 new cases per day in late May and early June, compared with 2,000-5,000 in the first half of May.

The country's central state of Maharashtra, with 82,968 cases, remains the most affected region. It is followed by the southern state of Tamil Nadu, with 30,152 cases, and the National Capital Territory of Delhi, with 27,654 cases.

Russia has registered 8,984 new COVID-19 cases in the past 24 hours, up from 8,855 recorded on Saturday, and the total count rose to 467,673 cases, the national coronavirus response centre said on Sunday.

"Over the past 24 hours, Russia has confirmed 8,984 COVID-19 cases in 84 regions, of which 3,458 (38.5 percent) have been detected actively, with people showing no clinical symptoms," the response center said in a statement.

Russia has so far recorded 467,673 cases of the disease in 85 regions, the center added.

Meanwhile, the country's death toll related to the coronavirus has grown by 134, down from 197 on Saturday, to 5,859.

As many as 5,343 COVID-19 patients have recovered across the country over the past day, compared to 8,708 on Saturday, bringing the total number of cured people to 226,731.

The number of people, who have died of COVID-19 in Brazil, has risen by 904 to 35,930 within the past 24 hours, the national Health Ministry said, adding that 27,075 new coronavirus cases were detected in the same period.

The day before, Brazil reported about 30,830 new cases of the coronavirus disease and recorded 1,005 new fatalities.

The total COVID-19 tally in Brazil now stands at 672,846. According to the ministry, 10,209 recovered from the disease over past day.

Brazil comes second on a global tally of coronavirus cases after the United States, which has recorded about 1.9 million COVID-19 patients.

Another 301 COVID-19 cases have been confirmed in Germany in the past 24 hours, which marks a decrease from the 407 new positive tests reported the day before, taking the total number of infections in the country to 183,979, according to the Robert Koch Institute’s data.

The death toll has grown by 22 to 8,668 people within the same period of time, which is a decrease from the 33 fatalities reported the day before. More than 169,000 people have fully recovered from the disease.

The highest number of coronavirus cases has been recorded in Bavaria (47,334), North Rhine-Westphalia (38,616) and Baden-Wurttemberg (34,912). Berlin has 6,997 cases.
