German Chancellor Angela Merkel's political bloc has failed to form a coalition that would give her a majority in parliament and the opportunity to create a functioning government.

MOSCOW (Sputnik) Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov commenting on the process to form a  parliamentary coalition in Germany said Moscow hopes that the process will be completed "successfully as soon as possible."

"President [Vladimir] Putin has traditionally advocated the preservation and further development of mutually beneficial relations between Germany and Russia, because economic interests are connected with this," he added.

He also said the formation of the parliamentary coalition was Germany's internal affair.

Negotiations on the creation of the coalition lasted about 4 weeks. German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier said that after the failure of the preliminary negotiations on the formation of the government, Germany has found itself in its most difficult political situation in 70 years.

According to Steinmeier, the parties all have the responsibility for the formation of the Cabinet.

Now there are two options left: the minority government, which has never been seen in German history, or new elections.

German Chancellor Angela Merkel is going to meet the president of the country Frank-Walter Steinmeier: whether it's a minority government or new elections, it is first necessary to go through the procedure of electing the chancellor in parliament, who must be appointed by the head of state.
