Poland is trying to convince other countries, namely Croatia, to turn down gas deliveries from Russia, Polish Foreign Minister Witold Waszczykowski said Friday.

WARSAW (Sputnik) — Poland consumes around 15 billion cubic meters of gas yearly, with 10 billion cubic meters being delivered by Russia's energy giant Gazprom.

"We want to end the Russian deal [on gas supplies when it expires] in 2022. Moreover, we are convincing other countries, such as Croatia, to build a gas terminal in the Adriatic that would be capable of providing gas from other countries to that part of Europe. We have also adopted a technical program for cooperation with the United States," Waszczykowski said in an interview with the Polish Radio, speaking about Polish efforts to counter the construction of the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline.

Nord Stream 2, a joint venture of Gazprom with France's Engie, Austria’s OMV AG, Royal Dutch Shell, Germany's Uniper and Wintershall, is expected to bring an estimated 55 billion cubic meters of Russian natural gas across the Baltic Sea, bypassing Ukraine, to a hub in Germany.

Poland has repeatedly opposed the project, with Polish President Andrzej Duda claiming that it "violates fundamental principles of the energy union and energy security of Central Europe" and accusing EU countries that support the construction of attempts to defend economic interests of their own countries "at the expense of security of smaller states."
