Japan tabled on Thursday its own draft resolution on a month-long mandate for a UN-Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) panel to probe the use of chemical weapons in Syria.

UNITED NATIONS (Sputnik) — A UN diplomat told Sputnik that Japan tabled on Thursday its own draft resolution on a month-long mandate for a UN-OPCW panel to probe the use of chemical weapons in Syria.

The diplomat said consultations on the initiative were scheduled for Friday. The UN Security Council is due to convene at 11 a.m. in New York for a closed-door meeting on Syria.

The motion follows two failed votes at the UN decision-making body Thursday on the adoption of two rival resolutions from the United States and Russia.

The US draft on a year-long extension was blocked by Russia and Bolivia, while China and Egypt abstained. The Russian document fell short of nine votes it needed to be passed, securing the support of four UNSC nations.
