The Cuban ambassador to Russia has commented on so-called “acoustic attacks” against US diplomats in Havana.

MOSCOW (Sputnik) — There is no evidence proving that the US embassy staff suffered alleged “acoustic attacks” in Havana, according to Cuban Ambassador to Russia Emilio Lozada Garcia.

“This is a large political manipulation that does not contribute to the improvement of relations between Cuba and the United States,” the ambassador told a press conference in Moscow.

The situation around alleged "acoustic attacks" escalated in August, when the US State Department said that several of its employees at the US embassy in Havana had been subjected to the "attack."

According to the US State Department, a total of 22 US diplomats in Cuba suffered a string of acoustic attacks with the use of special audio devices. Moreover, the incidents allegedly left at least two American diplomats with such serious health problems that they needed to be brought back to the US for treatment.

The Cuban Foreign Ministry has ruled out any Cuban involvement in the alleged attacks.

Nevertheless, State Department spokesperson Heather Nauert has announced that an investigation into the incident was underway, saying the Cuban government has an obligation to protect US diplomats. Havana has reiterated it was willing to cooperate with the United States to clarify the situation.

Despite Cuba's interest to settle the crisis, the US expelled two Cuban diplomats in what Havana described as “an unwarranted and unjustified decision.”

Later, Cuban media cited the Cuban Interior Ministry’s Lt. Col. Francisco Estrada Portales, who claimed that the Cuban authorities had conducted interviews with people living next to the US embassy and run necessary medical checks. The authorities had not found any damage to their health, even among those who resided very close to the building of the US diplomatic mission.
