US House of Representatives Speaker Paul Ryan and Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi on Thursday denounced a terrorist attack in Barcelona, Spain and extended their condolences to the families and loved ones of the victims.

WASHINGTON (Sputnik) — Earlier on Thursday, a van hit pedestrians in Las Ramblas street in central Barcelona. The authorities said that 13 people were killed and more than 50 were injured in the incident and they confirmed to be a terrorist attack.

"Pure evil in Barcelona," Ryan wrote on Twitter. "We stand with the people of Spain, and send our prayers to the victims of this horrible terrorist attack."

Pelosi echoed the sentiment, saying in a statement that the United States stands with Spain in an ongoing fight against terrorism.
