Russia wants to expand its cooperation with Thailand, including putting a stronger focus on people-to-people contacts, the Russian foreign minister said Thursday during his visit to Bangkok.

BANGKOK (Sputnik) — Sergey Lavrov said he was glad to meet with his Thai counterpart, Don Pramudwinai, adding, "We are interested in developing multi-pronged cooperation with the Kingdom of Thailand."

Lavrov stressed the Southeast Asian nation was Russia’s most ancient partner in the region. The two countries are marking 120 years of diplomatic relations this year.

The Russian foreign policy chief said Russia and Thailand had planned a series of events to commemorate their long friendship. He also offered his condolences over the death of Thailand's long-serving King Bhumibol Adulyadej last October at the age of 88.
