The Syrian ambassador to Russia said that Syria was positively assessing Russia's efforts aimed at fighting terrorism.

MOSCOW (Sputnik) – Syria is positively assessing Russia's efforts aimed at fighting terrorism, Syrian Ambassador to Russia Riyad Haddad said Wednesday.

"We highly appreciate the Russian role and the efforts it is making to fight terrorism … Russia is conducting policy, which is fully based on the international law, and is the main power countering terrorism. We are very thankful to our strategic friends," Haddad said at a press conference organized by the Rossiya Segodnya International Information Agency.

Syria's civil war between government forces and numerous insurgents, including opposition groups and terrorists, such as Daesh and Jabhat Fatah al-Sham al-Nusra Front, both outlawed in Russia, has raged for some five years and has claimed hundreds of thousands of lives.

Russia launched military operation against terrorist groups in Syria in September 2015, at the request of Syrian President Bashar Assad.
