MOSCOW (Sputnik) — Earlier in the day, Maurer arrived in Moscow to discuss crises in Syria and Ukraine with Russian officials. His meeting with Russian Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev is scheduled for Thursday.

"We are every time hopeful when we see the dialogue resumes," Maurer told journalists, asked about the possible new stage of cooperation between US and Russia on Syria in the light of the power change in the United States.

Political controversies and diplomatic conflicts are a great obstacle to humanitarian work, he added.

"We are deeply concerned when they become public and enter the battlefield," Maurer noted.

The ICRC president also stressed that even "if they [Russia and US] are perfectly allied," the solution of Syrian problem still needs the full engagement of Syrian conflicting sides, its neighbors and regional powers.

The ongoing violence in Syria has caused a large-scale humanitarian crisis, claimed the lives of thousands of people and displaced millions more. The international community has undertaken steps to end the Syrian conflict and to improve the humanitarian situation in the Middle Eastern country.
