Top military aide to the Iranian supreme leader said that the termination of the nuclear deal with Iran by the US President-elect Donald Trump would be a strategic mistake and would harm the United States.

MOSCOW (Sputnik) The termination of the nuclear deal with Iran by the US President-elect Donald Trump would be a strategic mistake and would harm the United States, Yahya Rahim Safavi, the top military aide to the Iranian supreme leader, warned on Wednesday.

"Any president who is empowered in the US is compelled to support the Zionists but annulment of the nuclear deal will be a strategic mistake and if (US President-elect Donald) Trump wants to call off the nuclear deal, it will harm the US," Safavi said, as cited by Fars news agency.

Safavi added that if the United States and its allies were truly seeking peace and security in the Middle East then they must talk to Iran.

Earlier this week, Safavi expressed hope that Trump would let go of any hostile policies toward Iran and the Middle East.

During the 2016 presidential campaign, Trump widely criticized the Iran nuclear agreement. The agreement seeks to ensure the peaceful nature of Iran’s nuclear program in exchange for sanctions relief.

Outgoing US President Barack Obama has said the Trump administration will have a hard time explaining the cancellation the agreement as is has stopped Iran from obtaining nuclear weapons.

In July 2015, the P5+1 group of countries, comprising China, France, Russia, the United Kingdom and the United States plus Germany, reached an agreement with Iran to ensure Tehran’s nuclear program remained peaceful. In mid-January, the sanctions on Tehran were removed after the International Atomic Energy Agency verified Iran’s compliance with the deal.
