JERUSALEM (Sputnik) — Russia urges the international community to ensure that the victims of the Holocaust are not forgotten by the humankind, Russian Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev said Friday.

"Preserving the memory [of the victims of the Holocaust] is a very important task for all of us," Medvedev said at his visit to Yad Vashem, Israel's memorial to the victims of the massive World War II genocide.

The Russian prime minister added that with the new interpretations of the history of the 20th century it was important not to forget the sheer scale and inhumanity of the Holocaust.

Russia "is trying to do its best so that the history of the mankind retained forever the memory of the victims of the Second World War, the victims of the Holocaust, the people that died at that period," Medvedev said.

The term Holocaust is used to denote actions taken by Nazi Germany, its allies and accomplices, in the persecution and extermination of up to 6 million Jews between 1933 and 1945.
