A senior Indian Minister had to step in to assuage fears over a loss of jobs if US President Donald Trump turned the screws on work visas and outsourcing. The threat is certainly serious because Indian outsourcing accounts for 20 per cent of its exports of goods and services.

New Delhi (Sputnik): India’s Trade Minister Nirmala Sitharaman said on Thursday that India will grab the first available opportunity to point out the benefits of outsourcing to the US Preident-elect Donald Trump.

“We will continue to negotiate with the government there and shall at the earliest available moment, brief [Trump] on the contribution of the Indian IT industry to the US economy. We hope the President-elect will be fair,” the Minister told journalists when asked about the impact on Indian businesses under a protectionist US Administration.

During his election campaign, Trump had expressed concern over job loss to the US citizens. India is in the cross hairs because 50,000 of its IT workers travel to the every year.

“What each of the candidate said during the campaign is one thing, now that you have the President-elect of the US; we need to know what position they are going to take and what it is,” says Sitharaman.
