MOSCOW (Sputnik) — RT broadcaster won a TV news reporting prize for a story on a former Afghan interpreter for UK troops who crossed the continent to claim asylum in Britain, the Asia-Pacific Broadcasting Union (ABU) said Monday.
Last year’s report – entitled "Will he ever get across the channel?" – told about Khushal’s nine-month journey across the Middle East, the Mediterranean Sea and Europe where he landed in the Calais migrant camp.
The report’s co-author Polina Boiko said Khushal’s story had a happy ending. He was admitted to the United Kingdom and media attention could have played a role in this, Boiko said.
Dozens of interpreters have reportedly sought asylum in the United Kingdom after receiving death threats from the Taliban for cooperating with coalition forces. The UK government is allegedly reviewing its policy of sending them back to Afghanistan after they cross into the country illegally.
