President Barack Obama extended the United States' condolences to the people of Thailand following the death of King Bhumibol Adulyadej.

WASHINGTON (Sputnik) — The United States offers condolences to the people of Thailand on the death of King Bhumibol Adulyadej on Thursday, President Barack Obama said in a statement.

"The American people and I stand with the people of Thailand as we mourn His Majesty the King's passing, and today we hold the Thai people in our thoughts and prayers," Obama stated on Thursday.

The Thai king died at age 88 after having been severely ill in recent years, according to reports.
